Another indicator was the call, which unfortunately I did not manage to capture in this video. The species landed a rare PR success when it managed to get on the cover of Current Zoology in 2022 (which incidentally seems to show a female with chicks, as the bill is more greyish than red).

Listed as Near Threatened, this charismatic species has a tiny distribution restricted to central Costa Rica, especially in the Central Valley. Over the course of the following hour or so we observed many different species *coincidentally* alight on the wall near to the body of the fallen yellowlegs. This Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo was seen and captured on camera by Josh Beck in Panama, the most reliable place to connect with this rare species. Not only did I find both species at the parking lot, I found a friend photographing some Marmots. I wasn’t disappointed.
