Yet More Good News for Project Treadstone

Regarding Adam's comment yesterday about low-cost spay/neuter, the reason this particular one is low-cost is that it is subsidized by the county and city (and maybe State, I'm not sure). This one's more like Good News for Mary Martin. I received a call yesterday from a woman who started a coalition for homeless cats. On Keeping "Vegan" Pure

Animal Person

I'd rather trap a feral cat and have her spayed. Kelly wondered whether the term "vegan" is " worth fighting for " given the latest trend of seemingly oxymoronish (waiting for that one to hit Webster's) terminology from the mouths of people who want to find a way to use animals, yet make it appear that they're not. Okay, that's not what she wrote, but that does seem to be what's occurring.

The Simple Economics of Pet Overpopulation

Critter News

The primary tool for this is spaying and neutering to decrease the population. It seems to me that the root of the problem in pet overpopulation can be expressed simply in economic terms. The supply of pets is way, way greater than the demand for them. What we need to do is reach an equilibrium where the supply for pets equals the demand. Many groups and individuals are working very hard on this by trying to decrease the supply.

I’m proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors—which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans—has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President.

When Is a Dog Unadoptable?

Critter News

One day while I was volunteering I met a little pit bull puppy who was recovering from a spaying. I rejoined my local animal shelter's volunteer program a few months ago (long story as to why I quit in the first place). Very sweet and gentle animal (I have a soft spot for pits.and pugs!) The puppy seemed too thin to me so I asked about her story. Apparently, she, her mother and seven siblings had been confiscated from a crack house. Someone had called in an animal cruelty report.

What To Do If You Find a Pit Bull

4 The Love Of Animals

In order to find a permanent home for your found pit bull as quickly as possible, PBRC suggests that you do the following: • Get your pit bull spayed or neutered and all of its shots. There are programs that exist that make costly vaccines and spaying/neutering affordable. • As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap. Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment. However, they are more vulnerable to being forced into fighting than other breeds.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

We’ve been educating, helping and begging people to spay and neuter their animals for years, but three million to four million cats and dogs still die in shelters every year because of simple math: too many animals, not enough worthy adoptive homes. This crisis calls for mandatory spay and neuter legislation.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: The real thrust of the American Kennel Club’s opposition to California Assembly Bill 1634 as stated in “ Should Most Pet Owners Be Required to Neuter Their Animals? ” (Editorial Observer, July 30) is not economic but rather that creating a one-size-fits-all law such as mandatory spay and neuter is not a workable, enforceable solution to reduce the diverse demographics of the state’s shelter population.
