Missing was Great Black-Hawk , missing on account of not spending enough time looking in the right places and the species having undergone serious decline in Costa Rica over the past 20 years. I looked in some of the right places but failed to connect. I also failed to see a Pearl Kite , maybe one of my biggest misses of the year.

My favorite species is the Oriental Scops Owl , a small owl that can be almost invisible if given the right motivation (e.g., I just included this Oriental Dollarbird to show that the bird is indeed blue(ish) in the right light. Of course, the adult male also got angry with people discarding their trash. too many birdwatchers).

In between way north and way south, the majority of Hudwits either fly right on over, or stop at regular rest and refueling sites. These days, we have a bit more coverage but the trick to connecting with a Hudwit in Costa Rica is the same as finding rare migrants anywhere; luck to be in the right place at just the right time.

A tropical tree called Jocote ( Spondias purpurea ) is in full fruit right now, so almost all of these birds’ ivory bills were dyed a light pink color. It’s mating season, and the males are sporting some wild head feathers right now. This isn’t the best photo, but it’s still a must-see.
