The listing was the result of a 2005 petition and litigation filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace. This is good news. For the full story, here's the link to the Environmental News Network. A federal judge on Thursday upheld a 2008 decision to protect polar bears throughout their range as a “threatened” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

I also learned that the Humane Society merged with the Fund for Animals in 2005. I just recently became a member of the Doris Day Animal League. Checking out their website, I came across this page saying that they merged with the Humane Society in 2006. The live link takes me to an announcement in 2006 about the merger. So now I'm a contributor and member of all three.without even realizing they were related!

We spent the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005 getting fired by vet after vet. There she is. my girl. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing. Violet Rays was a very successful competitor and the offspring of a Hall of Famer, and she made someone a lot of money, winning race after race for the two years she was hauled between Oregon and South Florida.

Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. This is Girlie Girl. Not to be confused with Little Girl, of course.

The school has not listed any non-human primates in this category from 2005 to 2009, according to the complaint. Sounds awful. Again, work by SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation Now.) From the MetroWest Daily News. An Ohio-based animal rights organization has filed a complaint against Harvard Medical School, alleging that the school's New England Primate Research Center in Southborough did not properly report its experiments on animals.

Thanks to their valued feedback, in 2005 we made an important change in our egg selection. I decided to look online for some information regarding the "Organic Free Range Eggs" that Trader Joe's, my favorite store, sells. Here is what their web site says. A Note About Eggs At Trader Joe's we listen to what our customers tell us about the choices we give them. As of this time, all Trader Joe's brand eggs come only from cage-free hens.

I came across this 2005 book from the Society & Animals Journal titled Confronting Cruelty Moral Orthodoxy and the Challenge of the Animal Rights Movement. Sounds interesting. Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? Responses to this question provide important insights into the much misunderstood animal rights movement and the people in it who challenge the moral orthodoxy that underpins our attitudes towards nonhuman animals.

A completely leucistic thrush had been recorded in the park in July 2005 and the observation had been written up in a far more formal style than you are likely to see from this blogger. noted that the bird from 2005 was to be found in a small area with a few conspecifics. There is a Rufous-bellied Thrush in a city park in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Actually, there are loads of them, but one is a slightly different version from the type-specific and I have become very fond of it.

The EPAA was created in 2005 and is an unprecedented collaboration between science and industry to reduce animal suffering in scientific tests. I just don't understand it. Is there a different culture regarding animals in Europe? They have drug companies that are just as powerful as those here. Is public outcry greater? Are animal rights organizations more effective? Are politicians more willing to act? What gives? From Cordis News.

Animals killed also include threatened and endangered species, a number which has steadily increased since 2005. Environmental groups have called on Obama to get rid of the USDA's Dept. of Wildlife Services , which is involved in mainly predator control programs (coyotes are a big target). Ranchers oppose the move.

Rollin , "Reasonable Partiality and Animal Ethics," Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 8 [April 2005]: 105-21, at 117 As we mentioned, Kant restricts having intrinsic value or being an end in itself to rational beings, but it is difficult to see why this should be so. Surely any sentient or conscious being has states that matter to it in a positive or negative way—pleasure matters to an animal in a positive way, pain or fear in a negative way.

Lee was also part of a team that created the first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005. The worlds’ first transgenic dog, Ruppy (short for Ruby Puppy), produces a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light. Ruppy and four other beagles are the first dogs to glow, though the experiment has taken place in other animals. Byeong-Chun Lee and his team created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that create a red fluorescent gene.

Franklin, Animal Rights and Moral Philosophy [New York: Columbia University Press, 2005], 125 To inflict death or pain on animals for scientific or medical research is wrong morally, and ought to be prohibited. This follows from everything said in the text about the rights of animals. This does not mean that animals may never be deliberately harmed or become subjects of research.

Franklin, Animal Rights and Moral Philosophy [New York: Columbia University Press, 2005], 45 [endnote omitted Animals as well as humans can suffer pain, deprivation, and unwanted death. Vegetables cannot. Hence there is a very fundamental and relevant sense in which we cannot harm a vegetable. Anything we do to a head of lettuce or the bloom of a flower can be harmful (or beneficial) to one or more sentient beings who feed on these or otherwise enjoy them.

Macy's, Gap and Liz Claiborne Inc are among the big names to warn of their ''growing alarm'' and frustration over the backdown by the marketing and research body Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) from its promise in 2005 to replace mulesing with a commercially viable alternative by the end of this year.
