It's been five years since the hunting ban was passed in Britain. It bans fox hunting, hare coursing, and stag hunting. That's right, a herd of panicked elk were cornered in a cow pasture and a group of boneheads decided to "hunt" them. Even other hunters were disgusted: "How can you call that hunting?" That can't be called hunting. As part of my effort to keep concerned wildlife enthusiasts informed about the proposal to hunt Eastern Flyway sandhill cranes, it is my duty to tell you that there’s another vote coming up. Earlier this week, Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea extended the end date of the annual seal hunt from May 15 to May 31. This is because of the poor "harvest" due to bad ice conditions. Poor, poor seal hunters. I'm sorry, but I don't care who makes money off this barbaric practice. It's cruel.

Our Snow Leopard sat, quite Cheetah-like, before stalking off and once again rolling in the gravel, apparently an indication of the desire to mask its scent before a hunt. We could not believe our fortune, could we really be treated to a Snow Leopard hunt – this was beyond our wildest dreams? This was truly an incredible encounter we had been so, so fortunate to witness; a full Snow Leopard hunt from beginning to end including the take and kill.

Ali Hussein or Hussain, a bird conservationist from India about whom I can find very little information, has apparently documented a traditional bird-trapping technique in his home region that resembles the folkloric snipe hunt in many particulars.

The egret used two different hunting strategies. It was odd to watch a single bird use such drastically different hunting styles and I really don’t have an explanation as to why. In my recent post about birding Jamaica Bay’s East Pond I mentioned a very successful Snowy Egret. It caught fish after fish after fish in the vicinity of the Raunt, which is the birders’ name for the old tumbled-down docks whose pilings stick out of the mud of the East Pond.

Dauphine works at the National Zoo studying wild birds, where her research has focused on one of birds’ enemies: cats.

PETA has launched a spoof site for the Vancouver Olympic Games over seal hunting. Seal hunting is just plain wrong. I criticize PETA a lot, but in this case I think they are right on the money. I hate the seal slaughter. I think it's barbaric and should be ended. You can go on and on about tradition, but just because something is old doesn't make it good. Slavery used to be a tradition in some societies. I like Canada.

Canadian fisheries ministry representative Garry Stenson said the hunt “is humane, well regulated and sustainable” and that new rules for the hunt were under review to strengthen inspections, monitoring and enforcement of animal welfare rules. It said a ban would decimate isolated east coast communities that are heavily dependent on the annual hunt. Oh, yeah, I forgot about Greenland. A pack of Black Vultures viscously savage a turtle But that is not all they do, they also hunt in packs, overpowering even the largest of the adult Olive Ridley Turtles, to then feast on them slowly. The American Black Vulture ( Coragyps atratus ) does not only look evil; it is evil to the core. Horrid. Over a hundred organizations have again petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to ban lead in hunting – a move opposed by many hunting groups. You’d think it would be a no-brainer but sadly hunters are resistant to a lead-bullet ban. At issue is that millions of birds each year end up eating the lead and dying.

The Canadian government has authorized the killing of 280,000 harp seals. I won't even bother asking the Canadians to stop this barbaric practice. The only way it will end is if the market for this product in Europe dries up. The US already has such a ban in place.
