Hero Dog Tries To Help Wounded Dog

Creature Talk

It is a great example of how loving and selfless non-human animals can be. The whole idea that so many people hold that says somehow humans have a monopoly on emotions kind of gets tossed out the window when you see something like this. This video just melts my heart. We could all learn a little something from this Hero Dog! more about “ Hero Dog Tries To Help Wounded Dog - … “, posted with vodpod.

We will increase our level of tactics as long as non-human primates and other animals are tortured to death at the hands of those driven by profit and as long as the University of California shows a complete disregard for the suffering of the non-human prisoners. Harvard Medical School Facility Accused of Improper Research Reporting

Critter News

The school has not listed any non-human primates in this category from 2005 to 2009, according to the complaint. Sounds awful. Again, work by SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation Now.) From the MetroWest Daily News. An Ohio-based animal rights organization has filed a complaint against Harvard Medical School, alleging that the school's New England Primate Research Center in Southborough did not properly report its experiments on animals.

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on the Golden Rule

Animal Ethics

I do not know that it can be better done than in the words of George Nicholson, one of those early pioneers to the influence of whose writings, though now almost forgotten, the cause of humaneness owes so much. "In In our dealings with the non-human as with the human race, it is not "charity," or "self-sacrifice," or "mercy" that is required, but simple justice —an insistence on our own duties as on those of our neighbors, a recognition of our neighbors'' rights as of our own.

Debate Over Injured Dog Video

Critter News

I think that such haters can't bear a non-human being heroic. It begs the question of the uniqueness of humanity and, of course, themselves. Not other humans in general, but themselves. I've only been able to watch this video, and read the comments, once. It's too much for me. The video is in Spanish. Essentially, a little dog gets hit on a busy street and no one stops to help it. Suddenly another dog comes into the street and drags the injured one to safety.

From Today's Los Angeles Times

Animal Ethics

It is estimated that due to conflicts with humans, the bushmeat and body parts trade, disease and habitat destruction, large mammals in Africa may be extinct by the end of this century. As an intelligent primate, I’d much rather be an ambassador for my species in a secure environment—served the best food and tended to by top-notch veterinarians—than take my chances in a national park where poverty and corruption result in little or no protection for the non-human residents.

On Dolphins as a Gateway to Animal Rights

Animal Person

I did tweet about " Scientists Say Dolphins Should Be Treated As 'Non-human Persons' " yesterday, as I think this is a Gray Matter for a lot of people and might be interesting to explore. Dolphins are so smart that scientists think they should be treated as "non-human persons" and as such it is "morally unacceptable" to use or kill them. Many dolphin brains are larger than our own and second in mass only to the human brain when corrected for body size."

On Dominance and Animal Birth Control

Animal Person

When taking the issue to simplest common denominator, spaying/neutering is essentially exercising human dominance over non-human animals. Meanwhile, I would love to be able to have some kind of law against human beings producing/reproducing more than one person per person. We are a far bigger problem on this planet than the (over)population of feral cats, elephants, Canada geese, or any other creature we "manage" or want to manage, "humanely" or otherwise.

On Bestiality

Animal Person

Now, mind you there are people who are actually mentally ill in the sense they 'can't get it up' without thinking of their mate as a fantasized non-human animal, I should mention this also includes mythological animals. A reader from Alaska sent the following e-mail, with his name, a nickname and phone number, and this is indeed a serious comment.

When You Have to Make a Choice About Your Beliefs

Critter News

I understand the realities of medical research, and I have recently audited companies in which non-human primate studies are a "cost of goods sold," but the lack of interest in pursuing an alternative and the coldness of her reasoning makes me sick to my stomach. These are core issues to me that are an integral part to who I am as a human being.

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on Moral Blindness

Animal Ethics

I do not share the extreme vegetarian view that food reform is the foundation of other reforms, for I think it can be shown that all cruelties to animals, whether inflicted in the interests of the dinner-table, the laboratory, the hunting-field, or any other institution, are the outcome of one and the same error—the blindness which can see no unity and kinship, but only difference and division, between the human and the non-human race.

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on the Ridicule of Vegetarians

Animal Ethics

Anxious relatives and indignant friends adjure him to remember the duty he owes to himself and to his family, and urge him for the sake of those dear to him, if not for his own, to return to that great sacramental bond of union between man and man—the eating of our non-human fellow-beings. But what of the many individual failures, it is asked, among those who make trial of Vegetarianism?

Robert Young on Killing Animals

Animal Ethics

Does my proposal as to what makes killing another human being generally a major moral wrong in any way help us with deciding what, if anything, is wrong with killing non-human animals and foetuses? I believe it does help. It seems reasonable to believe that many animals share in common with us that they have things they want to do in and with their lives or which they may come to want (either again or for the first time).

Philip E. Devine on the Overflow Principle

Animal Ethics

I propose that the moral significance of the suffering, mutilation, and death of non-human animals rests on the following, which may be called the overflow principle: Act towards that which, while not itself a person, is closely associated with personhood in a way coherent with an attitude of respect for persons. This approach to animal suffering allows us to reach a happy compromise between the utilitarian and non-utilitarian approaches to the problem of cruelty to animals.

Getting Emotional

Creature Talk

What immediately hit me after getting so emotional about this is how nature is kind in comparison to the horrible cruelties humans impose on non-human animals, especially “food&# animals. I mean, how can a human being be so incredibly heartless? How do you find the energy sometimes to go about your every day life when you know how much suffering there is in the world around you - human and non-human?

John Rodman on Dolphinic Wisdom

Animal Ethics

Now men in desperation voyage into outer space, searching far-off planets for signs of intelligent, non-human life. In the lore of the dolphins it is recorded that at some moment in time a few individual human beings will break through to a new, transhuman level of consciousness, will become true philosophers comprehending the whole in all its parts, and will quietly leave the city of man and make contact with the dolphins. Original Sin.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 8 of 13

Animal Ethics

Becoming a vegetarian is the most practical and effective step one can take towards [sic; kbj] ending both the killing of non-human [sic; kbj] animals and the infliction of suffering upon them. More important, it might be a much more efficient means of changing practice to stage protests at meat-packing companies, put pressure on congressmen, and work through existing humane organizations.
