What is your favorite bird species? Being here on Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean, we have many beautiful birds, and favorites always include the island’s icon, the American Flamingo, as well as the Yellow-shouldered Amazon Parrot. But I would have to say that my “spirit bird” is the White-tailed Kite.

Bird-Ranking: My favorite birds (as an amateur bird watcher)

As a little child, I´ve always liked watching birds fly around and imagined, what it would be like flying around on my own whenever I feel like it and not having to sit in an airplane full of nice people. The only reason for it being in fifth place is the unpleasant noise this bird tends to make, which greatly differs from its appearance.

The sea is frothing with Great Cormorant and Herring Gull , with more than 100 birds diving into the water. I park the car and walk through a cacophony of bird song to the viewpoint. I spend the next 45 minutes walking around the tree from which Mick is singing but just can’t find the bird. But where’s the bird?
