Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

One bird species that we occasionally observe around Broome is the Yellow-billed Spoonbill, but we had not seen one for a few years until recently. The river level is low this time of year and the bird-life was very good. We soon observed several bird species and then a Yellow-billed Spoonbill flew overhead.

Spotting My Florida Birds on their Maine Breeding Grounds

During a chilly Florida day (yes, we have those) a few months ago, I drove thirty minutes outside of Tallahassee to a co-worker’s house for the singular purpose of checking out her bird feeders. Purple Finches abounded in Florida this winter and spring, popping up at bird feeders around the state. The birds connect us!

A few more Pied Oystercatchers start to breed

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to the pair of Pied Oystercatchers that were the first to start breeding along our coast this year. Australasian Swamphens breeding near Broome

This year, with the exceptional rain and flooding across much of the land there has been a great opportunity for many bird species to move to the area and breed. It is not just the Magpie Geese and Pied Herons that arrived and chose to breed, but also the Australasian Swamphens. They have poor camouflage as you can see!

Tawny Frogmouths breeding again

The Tawny Frogmouths had bred once again and they had a young bird with them in the Poinciana tree that they like to use in Cygnet Park. We first noticed the odd eye in April this year, but it does not appear to bother it and it can still feed and obviously breed too. They’re great birds to be able to see so close to home!

There are Little Terns that breed across the north of Australia, Little Terns that breed on the coast of eastern and south-eastern Australia and another population that visit at this time of year from Asia. The population of Little Tern that visit from Asia breed in Asia and visit Australia in their non-breeding months.
