Haystack Rock There are other visitors, though, that spend their summers on our coastline that many people come to see – Tufted Puffins. The puffin colony on Haystack Rock is touted as the most easily viewable on the West Coast. Next, we check out the puffins that are usually intermixed into the flurry of birds.
” Alan Tilmouth reported in these pages a few months ago that due to extreme weather conditions, Atlantic Puffins and other seabirds were washing up on the shores of Great Britain. That is, warmer oceans are changing fish populations, with butterfish beginning to supplant the herring that Puffins usually feed their young.
When Daisy started talking about a family trip to Maine for the long Memorial Day Weekend I had one thing on my mind: puffins! Atlantic Puffins are easier to see, and see well, in Maine than anywhere else in the United States. I spotted two puffins on the way out though they were distant and took off before we got close.
The first time I saw a puffin, it was a revelation. Soon after our late afternoon arrival we met up with my friend Pete Salmonsohn, Education Coordinator for Audubon’s Project Puffin , who hustled us into a van for a 20-minute drive to New Harbor. We want all birds to be bursting with health, and we revel in our rare idle moments.
I love puffins. Before my trip to Washington the only species of puffin I had ever seen in the wild was the puffin of the Atlantic Ocean, the appropriately named Atlantic Puffin. At $55 a head, and free for toddler Desi, the chance to see puffins from a comfortable boat seemed too good to ignore.
It was a beautiful day to be out on the water, and in no time, we were cruising around Craigleith with Atlantic Puffins , Razorbills , Common Murres , and Black-legged Kittiwakes. The birds on this island face their own challenges with Tree Mallow, a non-native plant that has endangered the puffin colony.
We have around two thirds of the world population of Gannets, along with internationally important numbers of Guillemots, Puffins, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars. Though Gannets may be the birds that demand your attention, the supporting cast of Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins, Fulmars and Kittiwakes are equally fascinating.
I knew that the east coast of Newfoundland would charm me with its hundreds of thousands of Atlantic Puffins – since it is, after all, home to the largest Puffin colony in North America – but I had no idea that the gulls would be the ones to leave a lasting mark on me. Happy puffins.

My colleague Michaela absolutely loves Puffins and so I could not resist including this photo of a full-frontal puffin. Anyone who has tried to photograph the Blue Rock Thrush will know that it is not all that easy to get at eye-level with the bird; and finding a way to get the subtle blues to show is a serious challenge.
On our first morning after breakfast, my group and the teens piled onto a boat and headed out to Eastern Egg Rock, once again the breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins (as well as a host of other seabirds) thanks to biologist Dr. Stephen Kress. You might be expecting me to start writing about the amazing colonies of Northern Gannets Morus bassanus or Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica , among others. I’ve just returned from the Shetland Islands. But no, my story today is about the birds that come in to breed on the heather moorland which dominates the high ground.

The hotel owner told us that visiting them in the evening had the best showing of puffins as they returned to the cliffs from the sea. Thankfully the Puffins and Razorbills (arguably the most photogenic species) perch on the uppermost ledges, making them readily available for close-ups.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was any of the five Atlantic Puffins he saw on Eastern Egg Rock off the coast of Maine. Instead, I lucked into the best sighting I’ve ever had of a male Mourning Warbler in the same spot. He’ll be sure to share pictures once he’s back home and has access to his computer again.
2 Horned Puffin – Fratercula corniculata On my trip to Alaska, and the beautiful island of Kodiak to photograph the grizzly bears, my one wish was to track down and photograph the Puffins. There were 17 new birds that week, but the Horned Puffins remain my favorite. #1
No Atlantic Puffins , no Dovekies , no Thick-billed Murres ! Don’t get me wrong, those birds are cool birds, but when you are out in a boat for twelve hours specifically searching for alcids and you only get two of the five species you would expect in New York it is kind of disappointing. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California. A pelagic out of Hatteras, North Carolina , the Biggest Week in American Birding in Ohio , and trip to Puerto Rico stand out as well.
Birds like Chestnut-backed Chickadee , Pacific Wren and Pigeon Guillemot should be easy to track down for the first time Adding other alcids like Tufted Puffin or Marbled Murrelet to my life list will be much more difficult, but I have a trick or two up my sleeve to (hopefully) get them in my binoculars.
I had really wanted to get to the grasslands but life (and puffins ) had forced me to wait. So far as I know Dickcissels haven’t ever bred at Shawangunk and its been nearly thirty years since Henslow’s Sparrows were found there. Would the birds still be there? I shouldn’t have worried.

The auks, which range from puffins to guillemots all the way to the tiny auklets and murrelets, are typical for seabirds, long lived with tiny clutches of one or two eggs. The investment placed in each clutch bur seabirds is so great that only one breeding attempt can be seen to completion each year.
There is no feeling in the world like knowing your helping something you care about, whether its sharks or puffins, protecting forests or reefs, advancing science or communities.
