Species Spotlight: Snowy Owl

10,000 Birds

While the scientific name of the Snowy Owl, Bubo scandiacus suggests that the species has a specific connection to Scandinavia, it really has a circumpolar distribution – its breeding grounds are in the arctic tundra, and some of the birds winter somewhat further south. It is in such a wintering area, Inner Mongolia near Hailar, that the photos in this post were taken in December 2024.

What Should Sellers Know About Sales Urgency?

SalesFuel

Without a sense of urgency, desire loses its value. Jim Rohn. Procrastination is a common barrier in the B2B sales process. Deliberately, it occurs when your customer believes they have plenty of time to decide and a delay is harmless. Birding in Geneva, Switzerland.

10,000 Birds

For over 16 years, I had called Geneva, Switzerland home, yet I never once thought of it as a birding destination. Geneva, to me, was a city of diplomacy, lakeside cafés, picturesque Alpine views, banks, chocolates etc., but not a place where one might uncover a thriving birding scene. It took me far too long to realize that I had been overlooking an avian paradise right in my own backyard.

The Beach Life at Clam Pass

Everyone loves Clam Pass Beach in Naples, Florida. Wander there during low tide on a sunny day, and see who is hanging around the beach. The visitors and residents are yakking, snoozing, or preening. Of course, I mean the gulls, terns, and shorebirds, who are migrating through or are getting ready for the breeding season.

Ask A Birder: Can Birds Get Lost While Migrating?

10,000 Birds

The short answer: absolutely. Birds get lost all the time. Their built-in GPS may still be a mystery to us, but it isn’t infallible. Long distance migrants like waders and wheatears feature highly on the list of vagrants (birds that do not “belong“ in a given place).

Stamp-sized Nature

10,000 Birds

Urban birding is not without its challenges. For those of us foolish enough to go for a Big Year in a city the road is long and winding. That may be a bit over-dramatic – in Rotterdam the straight-lined public transport can get me to most birding spots and I will not dwell any longer on the physical discomfort needed to reach the remainder.

The request was made by my tocayo Pablo (a tocayo is anyone with whom one shares a name).
