So intent on keeping out of the storm in a landscape largely without shelter, it seemed to take little notice of me or the car as I paused to enjoy a close view. It was a male Kestrel.

There are some dense mangrove bushes there and they can shelter from the heat in the shade. They are often between the high tide and the area behind the dunes where there is often a lagoon after the big tides. Pair of Beach Stone-curlew between the ocean and the lagoon.

Buckthorn (though invasive and non native) provides both food and shelter and when it’s removed, it will keep birds away that like heavy cover and berries but the open space may eventually attract different birds. Can food, water and shelter be found? Sometimes it can be a change in habitat. Is it temporary?

Here are some photos of a lone Oriental Plover on Cable Beach. Oriental Plover The other extreme is where you have a very hot day and the birds move off the vegetation on the plains and seek shelter from the heat. They roost in literally thousands taking advantage of the sea breeze and then returning to the plains to feed in the evening.

My office closed early and my husband works alone in the woods, so we sheltered in place fairly early and avoided exposure. I was on my own for the evening. In terms of COVID-19’s effects on my life, I am currently one of the lucky ones. We love our house and our neighborhood, and my yard overlooks a particularly birdy pond.
