But for some reason, on a non-spectacular weekday morning I found myself reading a story about how a local shelter was calling for more volunteers to walk pups, as the number needing to be adopted had gone up drastically as during a down economy, many families were forced to leave their animals in the care of shelters.

Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. So intent on keeping out of the storm in a landscape largely without shelter, it seemed to take little notice of me or the car as I paused to enjoy a close view. It was a male Kestrel.

I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. The animal shelter committee voted to end the contract, but it goes before the County commissioners in April. In return, the company can use some of the unwanted dogs for animal research.

Shelter workers fear many owners may have assumed their animals died or they could be looking for them in the wrong places. Pets have been displaced as well as their owners in the recent wildfires.

We had taken a trail down from the main path in Kent Park to a shelter to discover several bird species in the area including the White-crested Laughingthrush. The first place we noticed the White-crested Laughingthrush was on the shelter roof. The shelter was in a small clearing and we were alone in the area apart from the birds.

It turned out to be an inspired choice, because my usual style of birding — parking at a trailhead and walking kilometers away from both my car and most other forms of shelter — would indeed have been disastrous. Instead, I was able to stick close to my car, taking shelter in it when necessary, and still see lots of birds.
