What Matters to Animals…

Creature Talk

Given my current living situation – a condo association that dictates how many animals I can keep in my home – I’m at capacity and can’t really take in a bunch of strays. The weekend of June 13th and 14th I went to an animal rights conference in the Twin Cities called Their Lives, Our Voices. Much like last year, it was awesome. I took notes and hope to write a few entries on what I learned there.

The hourlong film is an unflinching commentary on the overpopulation of stray dogs in Mexico, who even outnumber us humans in some regions. In a series of gruesome shots that even the most hardhearted will find difficult to watch, Buchanan’s camera captures the method used to rid the streets of the thousands of unwanted stray dogs in Mexico -– electrocution. This sounds like it would be very difficult to watch. It's called "Companions to None (Companeros de Nadie)."

5 Vital Questions When Adopting A Rescue Dog

4 The Love Of Animals

Right at the top of the list is the awareness that your new rescue has a shady history, especially if it was a stray. 5) Was the dog a stray or an owner drop off? Not all strays have health issues and many of them are simply pets that got loose and never claimed, however this question should still be asked. The decision to add a canine companion to your family is certainly a big one. Many factors need to be considered including breed, size and energy level.

10 Reasons Street Dogs Deserve to be Defended

4 The Love Of Animals

While we call them “strays,” implying they just absent-mindedly wandered away from home, most of them are what the rest of the world calls “street” dogs (and cats). No dog is happier to be rescued. I remember the first night after I left the streets. My human kept me in an enclosed porch because, let’s face it, I was crawling with fleas and pretty filthy. She put a dog bed outside with some food and water, and I’d see her checking on me about every five minutes.
