Rafting Possums Pose a Threat to Kapiti

10,000 Birds

Fishermen out near the island spotted a possum riding a floating log close to the island. It seems unlikely that the possum made it to the island, but it shows how vulnerable even the most important reserves are and how important it is to move towards a mammalian predator free New Zealand. Kapiti, a predator free island near Wellington that I’ve spoken of before , came close to receiving another mammalian invader recently.

Usually possums this small are with their mothers. Birds, possums, same problem. Keith, Here is a photo of a little guy we found across the street. It was chewing on the remains of a little bird that had fallen out of its nest. It was right on the curb and I was concerned about it getting run over. My son and I put it in a box and took it to a ditch area behind our house. This little guy appeared weak and the wound on its head is very apparent.

Bird art on grain silos

10,000 Birds

The main pollinators are the Honey Possum and the New Holland Honeyeater and they have both been painted onto the silos. As for the Honey Possum in the artwork they are a species that I do not have a photo of! In Western Australia there has been a project running for several years now to beautify grain silos and several have now been painted with native wildlife.

Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry. Possums still strip our native forests, ferrets and stoats and possums still devastate our native birds. New Zealand has a very odd biota these days. There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped.

Crows, Contest Killing, and Communication

10,000 Birds

Foxes, coons, coyotes, possums and hawks all get a free meal that lasts for days on some of the larger shoots.”. What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate. After scrolling through piles of furious emails regarding a recent blog about Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest , it seemed to me that all of us needed Dr. Phil. Accusations were leveled, assumptions were made, direct questions went unanswered, and there was no monitor to call the room to order.

The Kaka Nestor meridionalis

The population is estimated at fewer than 10,000 birds, and new information indicates that the species has almost disappeared from the mainland except for a few intensely managed sites, and those valleys that remain free of possums. ( When Duncan Wright contacted us back in 2010 to say that he thought we might enjoy showing some photos on 10,0000 Birds of Wellington’s big, boisterous parrots, he was 100% spot-on.

You’re Not Helping

10,000 Birds

Even wiping out one species, like possums, or stoats, or hedgehogs is probably beyond current methods. Conservation was in the news again in the last few weeks here in New Zealand, and unfortunately not in a good way. The subject is one that comes up a lot in this blog and other bird blogs, the subject of cats and their effect on wildlife.

Can Stewart Island become Pest Free?

10,000 Birds

The provision of more predator free islands has made conserving endangered species much easier, although there still are risks, illustrated perhaps best by a recent near miss where a possum almost reached predator-free Kapiti Island. New Zealand has one of the direst records of extinction is modern times, second on really to Hawaii in terms of bird species lost.

The highlight of the night was a Striped Possum, a large squirrel sized possum with black and white striped fur. Most of these were easy enough to find on later dates, along with the smaller native Bush Rats, but I only saw one Striped Possum. Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge is one of those birding destinations that leaves those about to go trembling with excitement and those merely reading about it green with envy. The film also featured hostile possums and a satisfying variety of angry birds, along with the Australia-requisite menacing snakes and spiders. Last night, a buddy of mine said, “Hey, have you seen Long Weekend ? It has a terrifying manatee in it!” ” Since that is a sentence that I never expected to hear in this lifetime, I told him that I had not and we settled in to watch 88 minutes of strange Australian horror.

One final surprise was a Green Ringtail , an endemic possum. Forest once covered much of the Atherton Tableland, but while much of that was cleared to create agricultural land some important parts remain. It is these forests, and not the wetlands I have spoken of before , that hold the many endemics that make the Atherton Tableland such a rewarding place to go birding. The Australian Brush-turkey ( Alectura lathami ) is a common sight in the rainforests of Australia.
