Rats Taking Over from Mice in Labs
DECEMBER 27, 2010
I recently fostered the sweetest little rat and I currently have two mice. While both rats and mice have similarities to humans, rats win out in key areas. Charles River Laboratories rats laboratories animal research miceTherefore, this Boston Globe article saddens me on both levels. And, of course, our old friend, Charles River Laboratories, will be a major supplier of lab rats.
Two Examples of Mice Experiments - Valid or Not?
OCTOBER 24, 2009
I came across these stories about two different medical experiments using mice. They used different lighting situations to see how they affect mice moods. Plus, are mice comparable to kids (although I would prefer mice subjects to primates who are so much more sensitive)? Here's another experiment using mice to determine whether stress and chemicals in plastic is leading to messed up male genitals and, therefore, infertility.
Canadian Council Says Mouse Pain Study Was Ethical
JULY 26, 2010
The research in question took place over many years and involved inducing various degrees of pain in mice using methods such as dipping their tails in hot water or injecting them with mustard oil or vinegar. The faces of the mice were then photographed to understand how they express pain. "No Mice were purposefully subjected to intense pain without anesthesia," said Norins. A Trip to an Animal Lab

but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs. Then, heading out, I noticed three little knitted mice. Tags: animal experimentation mice Guinea Pigs medical research biotech Well, kind of. It wasn't a full-fledged tour, but disturbing nonetheless. I can't really talk about what I do except that I work in government. In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. They did not experiment on primates (I asked!),
Hamsters Celebrate 70 Years in the US
OCTOBER 21, 2008
Sadly, though, some 200,000 hamsters were used for research in the United States in 2000, third behind rats and mice. Interesting article. Prior to the 1930s, hamsters were pretty much in the wild. Prior to the 1970s, virtually all were descended from one breeding pair. Now, one million hamsters are kept as pets, an increase of 41 percent since 2001. This includes the two sitting on the shelf in our house!)
San Francisco Considers Banning Pet Sales
JULY 18, 2010
All companion animals including dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, and lizards would be considered as pets. Pet sales would be banned altogether, except for the sale of pet fish. If it passes, San Francisco residents would have to go to a shelter or rescue group to adopt an animal. Sounds good, but I just don't believe this will pass. It would set a national precedent, even if it is San Francisco.
Charles River Laboratories Closes a Facility

which provides mice and other animals for scientific research, is suspending operations at its facility in Shrewsbury indefinitely and laying off 300 people, the Boston Business Journal reports. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. Here's the brief announcement from the Boston Business Journal in its entirety. Charles River Laboratories International Inc.,
University of Utah Cited by Dept. of Agriculture
APRIL 23, 2010
A kitten died from dehydration as a result of too much medication, individual primates were neglected for days at a time, mice and Guinea pig cages were found to be overcrowded, and calves may have been exposed to painful situations for too long, but University of Utah officials maintain that none of the most recent animal-testing violations, released Wednesday by the United States Department of Agriculture, were intentional.
Appeal Denied for Six Activists Convicted Under AEPA
OCTOBER 17, 2009
Huntingdon used mostly mice and rats , but also some dogs, monkeys, fish and guinea pigs , in its research in New Jersey. It was a 2-1 decision by the US Court of Appeals. From the Philadelphia Inquirer. Six members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty were convicted at a 2006 trial in New Jersey of conspiracy to violate the 1992 Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The law, since revised, aimed to protect animal research laboratories from illegal, sometimes violent protests.
Animal Research Grants a Waste of Taxpayer Money
MARCH 14, 2010
The result: antiquated, unnecessary and ridiculous experiments like those identified recently by In Defense of Animals, including studies of cocaine-addicted quail, nipple preference in nursing infant monkeys, toy preference in young monkeys, and effect of high-fat diets on mice (it made them fat and sleepy). I like this letter which appeared in the Brandenton Herald (FL).
PETA Busts University of Utah Research Lab
NOVEMBER 12, 2009
Failed to provide minimal enrichment for animals -- companionship for monkeys, balls for pigs, paper towels for mice -- to reduce emotional stress. An undercover PETA investigator shot hours of footage of alleged mistreatment of animals. A University representative denied any mistreatment: "None of the things she alleges are substantive," said Tom Parks, the U.'s s vice president for research. It's a remarkably banal list of ordinary events in an animal-care facility."
Southwest Primate Center "Celebrates" 10 Years
OCTOBER 6, 2009
And let's not forget the required sanctimonious quote from an animal researcher “Our primates are essential partners in medical progress, as are mice, rats, guinea pigs and opossums. This place is celebrating its 10th year with ground-breaking research into what makes us all fat. By destroying the health of baboons with fast food. Fast food is bad for you? Really?)

Growing Number of Scientists Question Animal Research
APRIL 4, 2009
Indeed, it often isn't even the best science: New drugs that show great promise in mice, for example, often confer zero benefit to humans, or even prove harmful. They're not necessarily questioning the ethics, but the efficacy. This is an excellent article that appeared in the Boston Globe last week. The feud between animal rights activists and researchers is among the bitterest in science.
European Union Screws Apes Used in Medical Research
JUNE 4, 2009
The EU's executive Commission last year proposed a range of measures to improve the welfare of the 12 million vertebrate animals used in experiments each year, mostly mice and rats. Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. It's from a Reuters article from last May.I will try not to smash my computer screen in frustration.
Quantico Has No Compassion for Feral Cats
DECEMBER 14, 2008
The raptors feed on these things (mice, rats), snakes feed on these things, it’s in the wild food chain and the cat interrupts that because it’s not part of the natural setting.” Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. They've prohibited feeding and want the animals trapped. If they are not adoptable, oh well, kill them. Please. It is NOT the animals' fault that they have been abandoned to miserable lives. (Of
Dogs and Rat Poison
4 The Love Of Animals
DECEMBER 8, 2011
Since wild mice and rats carry disease, ruin household foundations and leave a general mess everywhere… it is very wise to get rid of them as soon as possible. As the weather starts getting colder, there may be a problem with rodents coming into our homes to look for a warm place to nest. Many dog owners don’t realize, however, that rat poisons are extremely dangerous for dogs. Dogs eating rat poison is not an uncommon problem for dog owners. Rat poisons can be fatal even in small amounts.
Sowing the Seeds of Veganism

Parlay greyhounds aren't for entertainment to they're not for experimenting on to neither are mice (again, takes a minute, but I've done it). I was thinking about the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary calendar of rescued animals photographed by Deb Durant that's on my refrigerator. It's on the refrigerator, but when you open the refrigerator door you'll see nothing that came from the animals in the calendar. No animal secretion smells, nothing that's dripping bloody liquid.
Deconstructing Slate's "Pepper" Series

Engber mentions that in 1972, the USDA put into place "a special exemption for rats, mice, and birds, allowing scientists to treat them however they saw fit—in cages of any size, in experiments with any degree of pain and suffering. He concludes this segment with: Meanwhile, rats and mice are subject to some of the most extreme and invasive experiments in biomedicine. Whatever misery they endure is multiplied across the hundreds of millions of rats and mice used in labs every year.
Steve Best on The Left's Ignorance of Cognitive Ethology
JUNE 1, 2009
Humanized' mice speak volumes (scienceblog.com). Steve Best's verbal presentation of his ideas sometimes irks me. It's over-the-top, for me, and I often resent the time I must spend working through the ranting. But " Minding the Animals: Ethology and the Obsolescence of Left Humanism " is a great look back at how we humans have managed to always find a way to consider ourselves unique, despite what the reality of the nonhuman world tells us. Here are some of my favorite passages. [S]ince
On "Animal Activism"
MAY 23, 2009
If you believe your dog has a right to a life free of torture and slaughter for no reason, then you really ought to think about extending that right to mice, rats, chickens and fish. I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. I'm trying to gauge people's receptivity to what I'm about to say. I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind.
Teaching Kids Animal Compassion
4 The Love Of Animals
AUGUST 30, 2011
I got my first pets, mice and guinea pigs, when I was 8. Choosing the right pet for your child is key. By Dr. Tim Hunt, DVM. Children can learn so many valuable lessons by caring for a pet. Having pets at a young age instills kids with a sense of confidence that they can take care of an animal and help it to live a thriving life. More importantly I find pets can be great therapy for kids. Have you ever seen a kid talk to a pet and the animal responds by wagging its tail or purring?
Animal Rights is Pernicious Nonsense?
MAY 10, 2009
The "animal rights" focus, by contrast, is on our allegedly "cruel" treatment of individual animals in various specific, carefully selected and isolated contexts, from laboratory mice to farm mink to market hogs to broiler chickens, or whatever may be their next cause du jour , chosen specifically for getting the most uncritical media coverage and then getting a fresh flow of cash donations from their scientifically ignorant and easily duped contributors.
