I was in a bird photography hide in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand (with Alex Vargas) and we had just had an absolutely fabulous day enjoying and photographing a great variety of birds (and a Crab-eating Mongoose) when we were just getting ready to pack up and leave.

In addition to historic habitat loss and hunting, Nenes face introduced predators such as mongoose and feral cats. With help, the Nene population has increased to around 2,000 individuals. Still, these geese face significant population threats.

On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs. Although African Penguins can live upwards of 25 years in the wild, they face a tough life evading predators.

Slender Mongoose. A number of routes have already crossed back and forth a couple of times between the fleets. I am keeping my fingers crossed that JNB and CPT will one day make a welcome return to my rosters. Even in the days of roll film (remember that?)

I have seen unconcerned Cape Grey Mongoose and Four-striped Mice though. The gardens also have some mammals, although for the most part you’ll need to show up very early if you want to have any hope of seeing Cape Fox , Caracal and Cape Grysbok. The Forest Canary is one of several that can be found in the area.
