NASA Suspends Radiation Experiments

Critter News

For more than a year, we have worked to block NASA’s planned radiation experiments on live squirrel monkeys. We have just learned that the experiments have been cancelled. Due to the basic anatomical, biological, and physiological differences between squirrel monkeys and humans, these experiments were destined to fail. Received this today from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Excellent news! We did it!

My eBird Citizen Science Experiment

10,000 Birds

And that is where I started to experiment with the eBird. Two years ago, I was counting active nests of Rooks in the flat agricultural landscape north of Belgrade, Serbia. We drove for about 290 km through the 400 square kilometres expanse of Pancevacki Rit and found 8 breeding colonies with 252 occupied nests, or a density of 1.6 nests per 1 km2.

Gross Monkey Experiment

Critter News

Now this is pretty gross. I understand it's for HIV prevention, but still. testing a vaginal gel on monkeys. Disturbing. The gel was applied vaginally to three pigtailed macaques twice a week for seven weeks. Thirty minutes after each gel application, the animals were exposed to SHIV, for a total of 14 "challenges." A fourth animal received a placebo gel in the same manner. Two of the three macaques receiving the active gel remained uninfected after seven weeks of being exposed to SHIV.

Shark Attack Experiment: LIVE

4 The Love Of Animals

Nat Geo Wild is airing an amazing show tonight called Shark Attack Experiment: LIVE! Shark Attack Experiment: LIVE will feature a team of free-divers and conservationists putting their safety on the line to separate myth from reality and dispel negative myths about sharks while raising public awareness about shark species which are being driven to extinction. I for one can’t wait to see what the results of the experiments will be!

Ghoulish Primate Experiment in South Africa

Critter News

Johannesburg - A Bloemfontein man received a criminal record on Friday for a "backyard experiment" on a pregnant monkey, the NSPCA said. He had severed her spinal cord to paralyse her for a "backyard experiment. Warning! This is just horrible and sick, sick, sick. It's at a vomit level with me. From news24.com. The NSPCA in November 2008 charged Jordaan for his "merciless treatment" of a heavily pregnant vervet monkey.

NYT Equine Thought Experiment

Animal Person

And that fact gives rise to a thought-experiment. Forgot to hit "publish now" on this. The New York Times presents us, this morning, with "Equine Alternative" regarding the recent discovery that horses decided to allow themselves be domesticated by humans for our mutual benefit, earlier than we had thought (3500 BC, and we preciously thought it was more like 2500 BC). The site was where northern Kazakhstan is now, the culture was called Botai and the date was around 3500 B.C.

Protest To Stop Pointless Radiation Experiments

Critter News

PETA organized protests to stop these stupid radiation experiments on spider monkeys. The purpose is to determine how astronauts would fare on the way to Mars. To Mars? We can't even get out of Afghanistan and we're going to Mars. Next year? Give me an effing break.

NASA Funds Radiation Experiments on Monkeys

Critter News

Another animal experiment I would not support as a US taxpayer. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine are calling attention to it. The research project, led by Jack Bergman of McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate in Belmont, Mass., was one of 12 awarded radiobiology research grants through NASA's Human Research Program, the space agency announced October 27.

Millions of Animals Used in EU Experiments

Critter News

If the directive is approved, the number of animals used for experiments will be limited, and the animals’ welfare will be improved in accordance with ethical principles of the EU concerning animals. The European Parliament approves of the ban on testing on large primates (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans), which are threatened with extinction, except in experiments aimed at conservation of these endangered species. Awful. From the Epoch Times.

FL Animal Control Conducts Bizarre Experiment

Critter News

It was an "experiment" you see, even though they are just Animal Control, not a research facility. Clay County violated five federal animal welfare regulations in a in September 2008 experiment that involved putting a dog in a non-air-conditioned truck for an hour at midday, according to a U.S. News of the Weird Owners claim dog died from being in non-ventilated Animal Control vehicle. How should Animal Control evaluate their claim?

Two Examples of Mice Experiments - Valid or Not?

Critter News

I came across these stories about two different medical experiments using mice. In this experiment, scientists tested whether lighting can cause depression. Here's another experiment using mice to determine whether stress and chemicals in plastic is leading to messed up male genitals and, therefore, infertility. So, why put the animals through this if it's not even a reflective experiment. They used different lighting situations to see how they affect mice moods.

Two Blogs, Two Views on Experimenting on Chimps

Critter News

Here's a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania with an interesting post about the same issue, wondering how much we really need to experiment on chimps. This blogger, Earle Holland at Oregon State University, doesn't seem to believe the allegations coming out about the New Iberia Primate Center in Louisiana. He is the assistant vice president for research communications in the Office of University Relations. Here's his post about it.

Veganism in the Workplace

Creature Talk

I’d be interested in hearing about other people’s experiences in the work place. After a 7 month hiatus from this blog, I wonder: is anyone still out there? Anyone waiting for me to post? I bet you are just beside yourself with curiosity about where I’ve been. Answer: first I was trying to get a new job, then I got a new job, and now I’m BUSY as heck.

What Matters to Animals…

Creature Talk

Someone is doing an experiment on a chimp or a rabbit or a rat. The weekend of June 13th and 14th I went to an animal rights conference in the Twin Cities called Their Lives, Our Voices. Much like last year, it was awesome. I took notes and hope to write a few entries on what I learned there. For now, I’m going to start with the very last presentation (because I forgot my notebook so I don’t have notes, but it’s still fresh in my memory!)

To My Friends at Thanksgiving

Animal Person

Justice for beings who look very different from us but who, like us, experience pleasure and pain, boredom and frustration. Thanksgiving 2010 will be Baby Sky's first, and our opportunity to introduce her to the notion that our family doesn't eat animals (not to mention that other historical story we'll be correcting). There will be no greyhound corpse on our table, no turkey corpse and no pig corpse.

Meat with No Feet!?

Creature Talk

They experience pain and fear just like you and I would, and they want to live just as much as we do. A while back PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offered $1 million to any company or person who could come up with a cost effective way to produce cloned meat on a large scale, the goal being that people could still satisfy their meat cravings, but that animals wouldn’t have to be slaughtered for that purpose.

Over at Animal Rights and AntiOppression , we’ve been discussing tactics and sharing our thoughts and experiences about what works and doesn’t work when it comes to advocacy. Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists.

On Atheism and Veganism

Animal Person

Though we don't know the extent to which plants experience any kind of suffering, we do know that sentient nonhumans experience pain, pleasure, boredom and frustration. For me, atheism and veganism go hand-in-hand. Most of us were born to or adopted by people who eat animals and believe in a god, and that was all a mere accident of birth and/or geography. But something inside us (and perhaps prompted by something outside us) gradually (or quickly) questioned what was occurring.

On "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer

Animal Person

Some have tried to resolve this gap by hunting or butchering an animal themselves, as if those experiences might somehow legitimize the endeavor of eating animals. I immensely enjoyed "EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED" (even on the big screen) and eagerly anticipated "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer. His writing is beautiful, though I do have to admit that I haven't seen "shit" and its variations so frequently in one printed piece in quite a while. Ever, in fact.

They say they are taking the abundant gifts Mother Earth gives them and they are grateful for the sacred experience of communing with her. Animal Person

Is it true that the least I can do is support the engineering of animals who experience less unpleasantness than they would have had they not been engineered that way? If a person cares about what "livestock" experience on their way to becoming "meat," there is one easy, inexpensive action that person can take to make certain s/he is not a party to the various kinds and levels of suffering and injustice the animals experience.

Every person who claims that there is some kind of divine mandate that makes us inherently not only superior to nonhuman animals but permitted to do with them as they please, should experience Creature Quotes. She's living with her brother now and falling into debt, but she is dedicated to working with PETA and other organizations to try to ban primates in experiments. Increase in Dutch Animal Testing

Dutch researchers carried out 592,665 experiments on animals last year, a 2.5% More than half the experiments were carried out for academic research and one third of those were for medical research. From the DutchNews.nl. increase on 2008, government inspectors said on Friday. The increase was largely due to new EU rules on chemical compounds, which have led to an increase in testing on rats, the inspectors said.

Cats are slaves to no one, at least according to their reputation, which in my experience holds true. People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). There have been inquiries as to the possible relationship between his dissection of cats in school and the 19 counts of cruelty he is being charged with.

Is Charles with Lars Axl Fokker?

Animal Person

In all of the lovely messages we've been getting, I've noticed two trends: 1) Death is a communal experience as well as an individual one. Charles died a week ago today, and if you haven't seen Deb's tribute , it's a must-see and we're very grateful and humbled by her post as well as all of the e-mails and cards and calls we've received. One being dies, but the memories of death and the stories of life are brought to the fore for those who learn of the passing.
