Get Saltators in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Although in Latin, “saltator” means “jumper”, these birds aren’t doing any kangaroo imitations. Saltators, saltpotaters, salt n peppa, saltasaywhat? “Saltator” is another one of those “intriguing” names for certain bird species that live in Costa Rica and the Neotropical region. It’s a funny name for birds that sort of look like a missing link between tanagers and cardinal grosbeaks but I guess it fits.

The Summer Doldrums

10,000 Birds

Arctic Tern – the opposite of what I must be Though it is undoubtedly true That if with this plan I went through I would complain about those darned kangaroos So I’ll just stick with what works – a nice cold brew! Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums. Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside.

My favourite bird hide

If you are considering a vehicle for the outback and birding it is useful to have a Roo Bar, which protects your radiator if you have a close encounter with a kangaroo. Kalbarri: The Quintessential Outback

We didn’t see much wildlife but there were Red Kangaroos, Willy Wagtails and an Australian Darter . I’ve spent a lot of my life in Australia, not as much as I would like, but plenty. The nation and continent is vast and covers a huge range of habitat types. But that said, saying and thinking of Australia evokes the image of one habitat type in particular, but it’s the one I’ve explored the least. The Outback, the bush, the red centre.

Week 13: Melbourne, Australia Part 2

It just seemed wrong to post any stories about Australia without at least one Kangaroo, so on our second hike, those featured in the cover picture showed up on the edge of the forest. This is a continuation of the story about landing in Melbourne, Australia, and I will cover our afternoon the first day and my visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Big Ticks; What Was Your Last New Family?

As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. A few weeks ago I unexpectedly found myself in Canberra for a few days. Australia’s capital, set in the eucalypt-studded Great Dividing Ranges, has not got a fantastic reputation as an exciting place to be, but in truth its an attractive garden city with a lot of green spaces, parks, and other pleasant paces that make it a nice place to live.
