Somehow the GEICO Gecko ended up bouncing around with a kangaroo in Las Vegas! Have you seen the commercial? What other trouble did the GEICO Gecko get into? Richard Simmons was there. And even though we weren’t there in Las Vegas with the gecko, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get lucky!

In Torquay, Australia, after a mother kangaroo was struck by a car, a dog discovered a baby joey in her pouch and took it to his owner who cared for the youngster. Stories about animals rescuing members of their own and other species, including humans, abound. The 10-year-old dog and 4-month-old joey eventually became best friends.

It just seemed wrong to post any stories about Australia without at least one Kangaroo, so on our second hike, those featured in the cover picture showed up on the edge of the forest. If you have not read part one, it would be worth your time to do so, as there are some really great birds covered there. The first stop was at Little River.

This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. When we were at an amazing rock formation, called the Olgas, or Kata-Tjutas as the locals call them, this Nankeen Kestrel hunted all around me for well over 30 minutes before drifting away in search of better hunting grounds.

Near the town of Mareeba in the centre of the Tablelands, I didn’t visit it for birds, but instead to see a representative of that most Australian of animals, the kangaroo. The male in the shade He soon came out to see me though The feet of rock wallabies are relatively short for macropods (kangaroos and wallabies).

Red Kangaroos often stood in the middle of the single lane bitumen across the north of Australia and were in no rush to move on. Red Kangaroos. An area of highway that floods. You can see the condition of the edge of the highway is not great, so due care needs to be taken when moving off and onto it to let larger vehicles pass.

A couple of Island races exist on Kangaroo Is. The nominate, was described from southeastern Australia. longirostris is from the southwest and P.n canescens may be seen on Tasmania. and in the Bass Strait. The photos in this post are of the nominate form, from Royal National Park near Sydney.

The picnic area offers good opportunities to encounter Grey Kangaroos and they are particularly large animals. Grey Kangaroos at the Mundaring Weir picnic area. Sadly C Y O’Connor was criticized for his ideas and took his own life before the water had travelled the length of the pipe to reach Kalgoorlie.

In the shade there were several Western Grey Kangaroos that reluctantly moved to another shady spot as we approached and there were Yellow-rumped Thornbills and Splendid Fairywrens. . Western Grey Kangaroo. There were some reeds remaining as well and enough water to sustain a substantial amount of bird life and wildlife.

The other big attraction for visitors to the park is the large population of Grey Kangaroos. Grey Kangaroos. They are generally very relaxed animals and hang around in the tops of the eucalyptus trees. They are easily observed and are often observed lying in the shade during the day.

We didn’t see much wildlife but there were Red Kangaroos, Willy Wagtails and an Australian Darter . After climbing down the steep sides of the gorge our tour followed the pools that are all that is left of the river when its dry. One of the larger billabongs is 3 km long. Which means you can kayak along! No crocs here.

The females quickly pair off again with a new male who usually has a more relaxed attitude to the odd moving kangaroos in his patch. Scientists have found that as it is only the male that is a problem, and not all males, it is preferable to simply catch the problem males and relocate them away from people.

As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. I did eventually find the path (facing north, go east to the overflow park and two paths lead from there to the gate described in the link above), and found some rather nice woodland birding beyond.
