Moments later it came barreling down the cliff in a chase, scattering a herd of Blue Sheep in all directions, however it didn’t seem to reach striking distance of any of them. However, we were somewhat encouraged by spotting at least 10 herds of Blue Sheep (locally known as Bharal) on the slopes around this lower valley.

Despite being alone, it appeared to associate with the sheep in much the same way that it might with a flock of its own kind. Throw in Iberian Pigs, the odd fighting bull and a few flocks of sheep and the similarities are striking. The Portuguese equivalent would be the montado – a very similar landscape of wide-open plains and scattered oak trees. The dominant oak in the Spanish steppes is the Holm Oak, the Portuguese have Cork Oaks instead.

The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. In 1954, with stringent controls on the grazing of domestic animals, a herd of 20 Desert Bighorn Sheep were re-introduced and have flourished. The population is now estimated to be at over 500. I guess they were the greeters!

It sounds like a sheep , something even I can remember. I am generally fairly hopeless with regard to Bird ID via sound, which is a reason for me to like the Chinese White-browed Rosefinch. Then, there were Pink-rumped Rosefinches. At least that is what Bella thinks.

One raft of 20+ Mallards swims by the bank, right in front of jackals, careless like if they were just two sheep! They are sitting in the wet grass at the edge of the water, observing the bird movements around them. I am thrilled: this is more than just birding, this is a full-scale safari!
