my house had a mouse infestation so we set traps everywhere and a chipmunk came into my garage and got caught in one im guessing last night. It had tried to get off the trap so hard that it seperated its leg from its skin and would have died anyway if it was let back out into nature. i feel like s**t for doing it.

Over the years you may have learned to know better but it’s spring and you’re hopeful and maybe this time it’s an unfamiliar sparrow of some kind… but after maneuvering carefully around to a line of sight, it’s that furry little air-raid siren the Eastern chipmunk again. You sigh and move on.

While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The cute little critter was clearly looking for a handout which we did not provide.

He saw his first Garter Snake a couple of weeks ago on one such exploration and he is always excited to see Red-backed Salamanders , Cabbage White Butterflies , and Eastern Chipmunks. But what we found hiding amid the Black-eyed Susans on Sunday was clearly his favorite creature of the year. Gray Tree Frog.

A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

The Eastern Chipmunks sure enjoyed the fact we had a five-year-old and a four-year-old at our campsite. Check out my mom’s blog post where she has a nice shot of my father and I looking at the wood-warblers. This Red-eyed Vireo had just swallowed a very large bug. Well, mostly swallowed a very large bug. There is still some bug to go.

We decided on the relatively easy walk to to Shadow Lake and set out on our mission after Desi first chased off a curious Townsend’s Chipmunk. We had ourselves a bit of a snack and rested for awhile while watching chipmunks and robins and juncos forage in a meadow. It didn’t take too long for a bird to catch my interest.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk. but that's pretty much it for mammals.

At this stop we also observed Townsend’s Solitaire ( Myadestes townsendi ), Clark’s Nutcracker ( Nucifraga colubiana ) and a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatchs ( Sitta canadensis )… as well as several scurrying Chipmunks. In total we counted seventeen species at the rest stop!

I haven’t just seen birds, but the most amazing butterflies, red squirrels, chipmunks and even a deer… all surviving in forests so close to so many people. A lone Terek Sandpiper in Busan… they will be waiting for me in the hundreds in Broome! I have had a good time exploring.
