Olympic Chipmunk (Tamias amoenus caurinus)

10,000 Birds

One creature that I almost overlooked as just another chipmunk is the Olympic Chipmunk , known to scientists and Latin enthusiasts as Tamias amoenus caurinus , a subspecies of the Yellow-pine Chipmunk Tamias amoenus. In Olympic National Park the Olympic Chipmunk is “most common in the park’s subalpine zone where the forests blend into meadows. Though they are small and easily ignored chipmunks are also entertaining with their antics.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2018)

10,000 Birds

I finally made it to one of my favorite patches, but all I found were swarms of agitated chipmunks. Fortunately, two White-throated Sparrows proved courageous enough to withstand the chipmunk horde. September has drawn to a close, but the birding excitement may just be getting started, depending on where you live. Migratory season can last a while, so pace yourselves! They must have chased the birds away!

The “Birds” in the Brush

10,000 Birds

Over the years you may have learned to know better but it’s spring and you’re hopeful and maybe this time it’s an unfamiliar sparrow of some kind… but after maneuvering carefully around to a line of sight, it’s that furry little air-raid siren the Eastern chipmunk again. Montana has four species of chipmunk and six species of ground squirrel. The chipmunks, well, they all are fairly chipmunk-esque: small, stripey, and shrill.

Review: Backyard Birds and More: Looking Through the Glass by Glen Apseloff

10,000 Birds

Apseloff takes a wide-angled view (I told you) of his subject matter – chipmunks sitting cutely in decorative planters share this volume with a short chapter on bird deformities (not for the overly sensitive – especially not the cardinal with the fractured beak.) Back in 2013, I had the pleasure of reviewing Glen Apseloff’s Backyard Birds: Looking Through the Glass.

White-tailed Antelope Squirrels at Joshua Tree National Park

10,000 Birds

While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The White-tailed Antelope Squirrel , sometimes referred to as the White-tailed Ground Squirrel or the Antelope Chipmunk , is the rare diurnal mammal in the deserts of the southwestern United States.

He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit. A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. Did I have an answer for him. Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. Sometimes a defrosted chick.

Cat Owners: Can You Help Me?

10,000 Birds

This was followed by, “I have one who is a chipmunk murderer.”. My friend Nina is an animal lover. All her pets are rescues. She keeps her cats inside. Unless she is accompanying her dog, he stays in a fenced-in area. She doesn’t use pesticides, she loves the local wildlife, and she does everything a good pet owner should do. But one day, unbeknownst to her, a wild rabbit dug under the fence. She let her dog out, he spotted the rabbit, and took off like a bullet.

There’s More to Birding than Birds

10,000 Birds

And of course, way too many chipmunks and squirrels and raccoons and turtles to count. Much like Carrie’s recent experiences being hoodwinked by non-bird sources of birdy-sounding calls , I’ve had my share of animal encounters out in the field. In New York and Chicago, they’ve been pretty mundane—a White-tailed Deer here, an Eastern Cottontail rabbit there.

People of a Feather

10,000 Birds

A bit alarming, given the events of the last few weeks in Missoula, but after years of close encounters with chipmunks and ground squirrels I have finally gotten to have a pretty good idea of a rodent when I hear one. A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

At this stop we also observed Townsend’s Solitaire ( Myadestes townsendi ), Clark’s Nutcracker ( Nucifraga colubiana ) and a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatchs ( Sitta canadensis )… as well as several scurrying Chipmunks. A few weeks ago I led a field trip to Butte Valley Wildlife Area.

Birding – While Camping – North Lake State Park, Greene County, New York

10,000 Birds

The Eastern Chipmunks sure enjoyed the fact we had a five-year-old and a four-year-old at our campsite. This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. No, I wasn’t being punished, the apocalypse had not come, and I was putting myself through these privations voluntarily!

Birding Mount Rainier National Park

We decided on the relatively easy walk to to Shadow Lake and set out on our mission after Desi first chased off a curious Townsend’s Chipmunk. We had ourselves a bit of a snack and rested for awhile while watching chipmunks and robins and juncos forage in a meadow.

How To Help A Baby Bird

10,000 Birds

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. It’s a common call/email/text that most bird watchers get this time of year: “HELP! I just saved a baby bird! What do I do? What do I feed it?&#
