Olympic Chipmunk (Tamias amoenus caurinus)

One creature that I almost overlooked as just another chipmunk is the Olympic Chipmunk , known to scientists and Latin enthusiasts as Tamias amoenus caurinus , a subspecies of the Yellow-pine Chipmunk Tamias amoenus. Though they are small and easily ignored chipmunks are also entertaining with their antics.

Chipmunk and (Hare/Rabbit?) I met near the Poconos in Pennsylvania. The rabbit was a bit distant, but chipmunk was perfectly comfortable to stay a while, even eat a little.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2018)

I finally made it to one of my favorite patches, but all I found were swarms of agitated chipmunks. Fortunately, two White-throated Sparrows proved courageous enough to withstand the chipmunk horde. Migratory season can last a while, so pace yourselves! They must have chased the birds away!

While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The cute little critter was clearly looking for a handout which we did not provide.

A Gray Tree Frog in the Garden

He saw his first Garter Snake a couple of weeks ago on one such exploration and he is always excited to see Red-backed Salamanders , Cabbage White Butterflies , and Eastern Chipmunks. But what we found hiding amid the Black-eyed Susans on Sunday was clearly his favorite creature of the year. Gray Tree Frog.

A loud chirp rang from the side of the mountain, and a handful of stones skittered down the talus slope.

Butte Valley Wildlife Area and Meiss Lake

At this stop we also observed Townsend’s Solitaire ( Myadestes townsendi ), Clark’s Nutcracker ( Nucifraga colubiana ) and a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatchs ( Sitta canadensis )… as well as several scurrying Chipmunks. In total we counted seventeen species at the rest stop!

The Eastern Chipmunks sure enjoyed the fact we had a five-year-old and a four-year-old at our campsite. Check out my mom’s blog post where she has a nice shot of my father and I looking at the wood-warblers. This Red-eyed Vireo had just swallowed a very large bug. Well, mostly swallowed a very large bug. There is still some bug to go.

We decided on the relatively easy walk to to Shadow Lake and set out on our mission after Desi first chased off a curious Townsend’s Chipmunk. We had ourselves a bit of a snack and rested for awhile while watching chipmunks and robins and juncos forage in a meadow. It didn’t take too long for a bird to catch my interest.
