Now animal shelters have the right to refuse to release animals to the University of Utah for animal research. Davis County Animal Shelter, a key supplier to the University of Utah, has already ceased this practice. ALF Activist Pleads Guilty in Utah to Damaging Mink Farm

A man in Utah has pled guilty to "interfering with an animal enterprise" in federal court. The raid to which Viehl pleaded guilty took place at the McMullin mink farm in South Jordan in August 2008. Rydalch said the raid consisted of releasing minks and spray-painting parts of the farm, including a barn. She said the plea agreement "stated the damage and loss to real and personal property at the farm exceeded $10,000." Spray painting a barn?

ALF Activist Receives 21-Month Sentence

Alex Hall released 650 mink from McMullin Fur farm in South Jordan, Utah in 2008. He received a sentence of 21 months under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA.) Hall is expected to serve the rest of his sentence in Davis County Jail, rather than be shipped to a federal prison. He is expected to be released in two or three months.

Activist Indicted on Contempt Charges

A federal grand jury has indicted an animal rights activist who refused to testify about the release of thousands of mink from Utah ranches. I'm late on this one. The article is from October 5. Fox 13 Now reported. Jordan Halliday, 22, served several months in jail for contempt of court after he said he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination. When he was released in June, he was handed a federal grand jury indictment for contempt.

The seventh occurrence of Harlequin Ducks in Utah is now over. Because a hunter or hunters shot all three. They were apparently shot from the Antelope Island Causeway, where birders had been reporting them from, and, even worse, it seems that the hunters might have learned of their presence from birding listservs. This would seem to be yet another example of the interests of birders and hunters not coinciding. Guy Who Trained Flipper Protests Dolphin Slaughter

Today, the man who trained Flipper for the popular 1960s TV series is crusading against the slaughter of dolphins in Japan, captured by hidden cameras in a chilling documentary called “The Cove” that’s being shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. I just read this story today. The moment Flipper died in his arms, Richard O’Barry was transformed from a dolphin trainer into an activist determined to free captive dolphins around the world. I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. These beautiful birds are now reduced in numbers or distribution throughout their range and considered to be declining in Utah, Nevada, and Oregon. They are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, and as Threatened in California. This past weekend I took a trip to the small town of Portola in Plumas county for a Northern California Audubon Council meeting hosted by Plumas Audubon Society.

So, each of the seven “California” birds is also found outside of California: California Condor , California Gull (which is Utah’s state bird!), I saw my first in Utah back in 2010 right around the time I first started birding but didn’t see one in California proper until a visit to Point Reyes National Seashore in October of last year. At last count, there are 25 species of birds named for U.S. states, with varying degrees of geographical relevance (sorry, Tennessee Warbler ).

Bird Litigation: Hindsight and the California Condor

FWS began releasing captive-bred condors from the program into the wild in the early 1990s, with considerable success: once down to 22 birds, there are now approximately 275 wild condors in California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California, as well as 165 in captivity. It is not always obvious which side of a bird-related conservation lawsuit is the right side. As many birders know, the last wild California Condors were captured by the U.S.
