Steps Towards Ending Factory Farming?

Similar limits were approved last year in Michigan and less sweeping restrictions have been adopted in Florida, Arizona and other states. Well, maybe, although I think there is still a long way to go. Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. This concession was to avoid a November ballot vote a la California's Proposition 2.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund provided $3500.00 From the ALDF site: Dearborn, Mich.– Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced today that Dearborn dog hoarder Kenneth Lang Jr is being charged with two counts of cruelty to 10 or more animals, after more than 100 live and approximately 150 dead Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes were removed from the filthy home this past July.

Kirtland’s Warbler Population Stable

Their were 1,805 pairs of Kirtland’s Warblers found in Michigan this year, second only to 2009′s 1,813. The population has stabilized with neither increases nor decreases of greater than five percent since 2007. A couple dozen pairs also nest in neighboring states and provinces. This time of year, with its excess of heat and humidity, gladdens me in a fundamental way that seems seems similar to how John Clare must have felt when composing his poem Summer Moods back in 1835: I love at eventide to walk alone. Down narrow lanes oerhung with dewy thorn. Where from the long grass underneath–the snail. Jet black creeps out & sprouts his timid horn.
