Catching the End of Migration on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail

The Predominately Western, Golden-crowned Sparrow

Even though it doesn’t show on the NatureServe range map above, Golden-crowned Sparrow vagrants have been recorded eastward to Ontario and Nova Scotia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey; also south to Alabama, Texas, Louisiana and Florida 1. At first glance you might not recognize this bird as a Golden-crowned Sparrow ( Zonotrichia atricapilla ).

The Warbler Duo of Florida’s Mangroves

For those wishing to see this interesting subspecies in Florida, it is tolerably common within its small range in the state, with reliable sites including Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road and the Guy Bradley Trail at Flamingo, Everglades National Park. I always like to see the look of surprise on a visiting birder’s face when I tell them that the Prairie Warblers and Yellow Warblers in southern Florida are restricted to mangrove habitats.

Ten Highlights from Birding in Costa Rica, 2018
