An activist organized an appeal in which people from around the country and the world could contact the legislators in opposition to the bill. This is very common and occurs to local, state and federal representatives.

Every time a return to Missouri, I try to knock out a couple more species of birds I missed when I was a resident there. There has been so much said about Travis the chimp this week. It's 1) a gory story with 2) the bizarre tie-in to the New York Post's inexplicable use of Travis' image in a cartoon about the stimulus package. What were they thinking?) That image was wrong on so many levels. But let's stick to the animal rights issue.

Despite assurances by Petland staff and on their corporate website that the company knows its breeders and deals only with those who have "the highest standards of pet care," many Petland puppies come from massive commercial breeders in Missouri and other Midwestern states, where hundreds of breeding dogs are packed into cramped, barren cages—often for their entire lives, with no socialization, exercise, or human interaction. This news story slipped by in November.

According to eBird , I have been entering checklists since December 23, 2009, and I find it an incredibly useful way to maintain my lists, plan birding travel, and keep up on my favorite hotspots. eBird automatically organizes my observations by country, state, and county, and keeps running totals for my life and year lists.

Where I grew up in Missouri, Catbirds were present, but not in the same density that I find here in North Carolina. Louis Cardinals on the radio in Ozark, Missouri. Here in the southeast we have three Mimids of three distinct groups all present more or less throughout the year. The Northern Mockingbird is easily the most famous, celebrated in classic literature and song and deemed notable enough to have the honor of being the official state bird of five southern states.

The Little Missouri National Grassland in western North Dakota covers over 1 million acres and is the largest grassland in the United States. If you like birds on posts, if seeing “little brown jobs” posing nicely in the distance as you drive or walk along a dirt road only to have it fly away as you approach makes you deliriously happy, then North Dakota is the place for you. I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy.

A big thank you goes out to Tristan, who demonstrated that at least one person reads this drivel. He pointed out that Illinois had been sadly neglected up to this point, so Redgannet made a special visit to Chicago to redress this oversight. Tom and Pat were toe to toe in Costa Rica , so the numbers from there outshone anything else on the list for November, with over 60% of the month’s total shared between them. 8 beats shared 126 checklists accounting for 704 species.
