Irene didn’t bring much in the way of passerines though a single Yellow Warbler cheered up the French briefly by allowing itself to be trapped in a reedbed in France on 30th August. Irene sends her love. As might be expected she was feeling a little weaker after crossing the Atlantic and wasn’t quite the ‘big lady’ that she was on your side of the pond.

Pin-tailed Sandgrouse

The nominate form can be seen in Spain and southern France. A Pin-tailed Sandgrouse flew across the front of the hide and landed on the other side of a freshwater sluice, just a few meters away under the watchful eye of a Slender-billed Gull. A security guard who mans the hide had spotted it earlier and pointed it out, but at the time it was quite a long way off and in a small hollow, making it difficult to identify. Not very many hides come with their own defence personnel.

Blue Monday turned Black Monday – a picture story

The Black Stork ( Ciconia nigra ) has a very wide distribution in the Old World, ranging from Spain (an isolated population) and northern France through central and eastern Europe all across northern and central Asia to the Pacific coast of Russia and China. This is a short account of what happened one fine Monday around noon, March 21st of 2011, while I was at work. It won’t need many accompanying words, so I won’t deliver many.

The mysterious international Lesser Scaup

Because of all the places it could have called its winter home, it chose the Rhine separating Huningue and Weil am Rhein, the border triangle of Switzerland, France and Germany. Its preferred place – the feeding area – is in Huningue in France, 109 m away from the German border that runs along the centre of the river, and a bit further away from the Swiss part of the Rhine to the South of Germany.
