Snow-fronted Geese

10,000 Birds

There are hordes of fowl here (fowl of the water) in winter, with geese having the most prominent presence. Recently I ditched the coast and headed into the bowels of the Central Valley, to meet up with an old friend…you may know him by the name “ Falcated Duck “ Falcated Duck eluded us at first, but eventually let us stare at him at will. But this post is not about Falcated Duck.

Trillium Brewing Company: Stumpy Duck American Pale Ale

10,000 Birds

Actually, the Small Bird Series includes some rather hefty fowl like chickens and geese – a far cry from the kinglets, gnatcatchers, and hummingbirds I was originally hoping for. There are two invasive human commensals (a House Sparrow and a Rock Pigeon), two fully-domesticated fowl (both a rooster and a hen), one introduced gamebird (a partridge), and a penguin I didn’t identify but which seems to have been added mostly for a little wildcard variety.

Avian influenza H5N2 in the Mississippi and Pacific Flyways

10,000 Birds

This mainly affects domestic fowl, and in this sense is not a topic central to 10,000 Birds. Overall the problem is not huge; the total number of birds affected is small, and the market for domestic fowl is robust. Interestingly, H5N2 has been used as a vaccine for domestic fowl to prevent H5N1, the more infectious avian influenza. What is H5N2 Avian Influenza? H5N2 is a bird influenza virus that is making news.

A Birdy Lunch in the Caribbean Lowlands of Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

There’s nothing like a birdy, bird-filled lunch and I’m not talking about some lemon domesticated jungle fowl tagine either (although that is damn good too!). I mean watching cool birds at close range while enjoying the midday repast. In Costa Rica, whether I happen to be birding for fun or searching out target birds for others, I strive to combine birds with lunch. In Costa Rica, that’s easy enough to do.

Feed me or I’ll die, and possibly take you with me!

10,000 Birds

Maybe it is endemic to domestic fowl and is being spread among those birds in markets, but perhaps it is in wild birds, most likely waterfowl, instead or as well. Years ago it was pointed out by somebody, probably Tinbergen or Lack or Wynn-Edwards or one of the other great bird-savvy ethologists of the day, that young Pelicans would blackmail their parents by biting their own wings, a very self defeating activity for a bird with a huge and powerful beak.

Champagne and Birds

Vintage Champagne ads are another story though, with a handful of old examples featuring domestic fowl, as in this rooster poster… …or gamebirds, as in this especially attractive label from pioneering California winemaker Paul Masson, which features a partridge (and its eye): But this was all very long ago. A year ago, we presented a barleywine, a very strong beer, as a stand-in for the traditional Champagne in our New Year’s Eve edition of Birds and Booze.

With enough imagination and superstition, some birds can be absolutely frightening – as the multitude of spooky fowl haunting the darkest corners of human culture throughout history will attest. In our times, it seems foolish to be fearful of birds.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

10,000 Birds

It is one of the ancestors of domestic fowl. February 2013. In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. Traveling the rural Maharashtra on previous days, every village had its share of small, slim and long-legged domestic chickens crossing in front of us, not unlike this wild cousin at all. Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home.

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

10,000 Birds

They became known as “Turkie Fowl” (spelling varies) because they were coming from the general direction of Turkey. The “Fowl” was dropped and the term “Turkey” was applied to other large Galliformes that were encountered in the New World. The believability of this is underscored by the fact that the Pilgrims and their guides listed among their possession numerous “fowling pieces” … for hunting wild birds.

Decoy: Cabernet Sauvignon (2016)

10,000 Birds

Over time, the word “decoy” has lost its fowling connotations and has come to mean any kind of trick or fakery. This just might be a birding joke as old as the hills, but it’s one I hear without fail every year come Christmas Bird Count season in upstate New York. Not long after the compilation gets underway starting with the order Anseriformes , we come to Aix sponsa and the compiler asks – hopefully – “Any Wood Ducks?”

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on Fish-Eating

Animal Ethics

Thompson has only shown his unfamiliarity with the subject, for his novel proposition is in fact an old one, which has been debated and rejected by the Vegetarian Society in its adherence to its original rule of excluding fish, flesh and fowl, and nothing else, from its dietary. Before leaving this question of "consistency," as affected by the gradations of our duty of humaneness to animals, a few words may be said on the practice of fish-eating.

Gardner Williams (1895-1972) on Wronging Animals

Animal Ethics

The interests in nourishment and in gustatory pleasure lead man to kill and eat cattle, fish, and fowl. This cuts down on the long-range satisfactions of the cattle, the fish, and the fowl. Love demands, as every interest demands, that it should dominate life completely.

Lewis originated the term as a pun on Chaucer’s Parliament of Fowls. Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. And the term is ‘non-reversed size dimorphism.’). ’).

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 3 of 13

Animal Ethics

Most moral vegetarians list fish and fowl as animals one should not eat. For an explanation of this feature, click on “Moral Vegetarianism” at the bottom of this post. What Meat Should Not Be Eaten? What is forbidden meat? But what about microorganisms? Vegan vegetarians who eat only vegetables, fruit, and nuts do not completely remove all microorganisms from their food, even with repeated cleaning.

Animal Person

Note to everyone who works with birds and water fowl: Hypothermia and rapid freezing are not appropriate methods of euthanasia and are not considered to be humane unless the animal is anesthetized prior to freezing. I was watching a news segment on a wildlife rehabilitation center here in Florida. It was time to feed the bird of prey who was about to be released and while the rehabber was speaking with the interviewer someone emerged from a walk-in freezer with a tray of baby chicks.
