Now France can add another to its long list of gastronomic sins.eating ortolan, an endangered songbird. The hunting and selling of ortolans, which have suffered a Europe-wide decline of 40-50% in the last 40 years, has been illegal in France since 1999. Tags: poaching france endangered species. A Greek Wild Cat , photographed near Lake Kerkini I’ve had a few encounters with wild cats, too, in both France and Greece. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range.

In parts of Western Europe, it is considered to be “exotic” because it has been introduced, possibly by anglers, in lakes and rivers in France and the Iberian Peninsula. Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird.

Eventually, the name came to be attached to another kind of game hunting device with which we’re more familiar today: life-sized wooden carvings of waterfowl floated on water to fool birds into landing within range of nearby hunters lying in wait.
