Gulf Oil a Looming Threat to Marine Life
MAY 18, 2010
So far, we're not seeing the large-scale impact of this oil spill on marine life. Scientists fear the oil will make it difficult for marine animals to obtain the oxygen they need to survive. Tags: oil drilling marine life marine animals 2010 oil spill But there are concerns out there. It may not be immediate, like oil-coated birds, but slower and more subtle, like the effect on oxygen levels in the sea. This is a complex ecosystem we're dealing with.
Reduce Plastics in Order to Save Marine Life

Marine life. The protection of marine animals may fall under "environmentalism," but these are artificial divisions. Here's a short opinion piece on plastics and marine life. Tags: oceans marine life environment plastic I am one of those people that will pick up disgusting plastic bags just lying on the streets and throw them away. First of all, it's gross (find your own planet to dump your trash on), but it's also dangerous for animals.
Possible New Sonar Rules to Protect Marine Life
JULY 31, 2009
The use of sonar is controversial because of its harmful effects on marine life such as whales. The goal is to decrease the harm that sonar does to marine mammals. The National Marine Fisheries Service and Navy expect to make a joint decision on such measures by the end of the year, NMFS spokesman Peter Fischel said. It's the same problem with marine life. Tags: marine life marine animals endangered species We hear about the problem with charismatic land species. It's those species that either have a powerful personality or a cute face that endear people to them and garner news attention. Examples include panda bears, wolves, elephants, tigers, etc. It's easier to motivate people to save them as opposed to other species that are vital, but either boring or ugly.

Whales Share Some Human Traits, Study Shows
JUNE 20, 2010
As the future of whales once more comes under global debate, some scientists say the marine mammals are not only smarter than thought but also share several attributes once claimed as exclusively human. Self-awareness, suffering and a social culture along with high mental abilities are a hallmark of cetaceans, an order grouping more than 80 whales, dolphins and porpoises, say marine biologists. Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour
MARCH 28, 2010
It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. Nations where livelihoods depend on fishing the tuna and on harvesting other marine species held sway over countries, including the US, that pointed to scientific evidence of drastically dwindling populations. Over the years, environmentalists have learned that arguing solely on behalf of other life forms is not enough. "Earth Hour" was held yesterday.

Think Bush Is a Pro-Animal Environmentalist? Think Again!
JANUARY 17, 2008
According to this AP Newswire issued yesterday: "President Bush exempted the Navy from an environmental law so it can continue using sonar in its anti-submarine warfare training off the California coast — a practice critics say is harmful to whales and other marine mammals. Critics contend sonar has harmful effects on whales, possibly by damaging their hearing, and other marine mammals worldwide.
