Gulf Oil a Looming Threat to Marine Life

Critter News

So far, we're not seeing the large-scale impact of this oil spill on marine life. Scientists fear the oil will make it difficult for marine animals to obtain the oxygen they need to survive. Tags: oil drilling marine life marine animals 2010 oil spill But there are concerns out there. It may not be immediate, like oil-coated birds, but slower and more subtle, like the effect on oxygen levels in the sea. This is a complex ecosystem we're dealing with.

Reduce Plastics in Order to Save Marine Life

First of all, it's gross (find your own planet to dump your trash on), but it's also dangerous for animals.

Possible New Sonar Rules to Protect Marine Life

Critter News

The use of sonar is controversial because of its harmful effects on marine life such as whales. The goal is to decrease the harm that sonar does to marine mammals. The National Marine Fisheries Service and Navy expect to make a joint decision on such measures by the end of the year, NMFS spokesman Peter Fischel said. Saving Marine Animals that Are NOT Cute

Critter News

It's the same problem with marine life. Tags: marine life marine animals endangered species We hear about the problem with charismatic land species. It's those species that either have a powerful personality or a cute face that endear people to them and garner news attention. Examples include panda bears, wolves, elephants, tigers, etc. It's easier to motivate people to save them as opposed to other species that are vital, but either boring or ugly.

Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour

It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. Nations where livelihoods depend on fishing the tuna and on harvesting other marine species held sway over countries, including the US, that pointed to scientific evidence of drastically dwindling populations. Over the years, environmentalists have learned that arguing solely on behalf of other life forms is not enough. "Earth Hour" was held yesterday.

Birds In a Changing Climate: A Primer

Every bird that uses marine ecosystems, from storm-petrels to Bald Eagles , already feels the effects of ocean acidification on some level; it is estimated that within the past 200 years, our oceans have become 30% more acidic, which is shocking. Altering the ocean’s chemistry alters the way marine life reproduces and develops; for example, a young marine snail simply cannot develop a shell in conditions that are too acidic, and will die.
