Polar Bear Supporters Lose Court Case

Critter News

A federal appeals court made a final decision Wednesday on whether Fish and Wildlife could allow oil companies to interfere with polar bears. Fish and Wildlife service wrongfully issued authorization for oil companies to work in areas that could potentially hurt the bears. They claimed Fish and Wildlife failed to consider effects of climate change and had a false idea of how many polar bears would be affected. Another story from last week, but worth mentioning.

Trophy Hunters Imperil Polar Bears

Critter News

Therefore, to me it's a slam dunk as to whether trophy hunters should continue to hunt polar bears. Tags: indigenous hunting canada polar bear trophy hunting endangered species arctic I have no sympathy for trophy hunters. They are not hunting for food or for any subsistence whatsoever. It's all about the thrill of the hunt and, sorry to say it, the thrill of the testosterone surge.

Calgary Zoo Feeling Economic Pressure

Critter News

They had to cancel a big project that would have showcased polar bears and seals. Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears. Knut's Keeper Dies

Remember Knut the polar bear at the Berlin Zoo? OK, it doesn't have a lot to do with "critters" per se, other then the fact that it deals with That One that approves of killing wolves and polar bears. And it's really really funny. And hey, the title also uses the word vet in TWO different ways that don't mean veterinarian.

Walrus in Trouble Too

Critter News

We tend to talk about penguins and polar bears, but these guys are important too. I'm finally getting caught up on some reading and came across this article in the Defenders of Wildlife wildlife. I'm very proud of supporting Defenders because I think they do great work and they have a really good magazine too. Very depressing sometimes though. The summer issue had a good article about walruses.

We loved seeing penguins, whales, polar bears, and wolves. The 3 disc set includes many special features: • On Thin Ice – A unique exploration into how climate change is affecting the animals and people of the polar regions and what that might mean for the rest of us. We were glued to the TV when Discovery Chanel was airing Frozen Planet, and we have been even more enthralled now that we have the entire collection on DVD (they also have it in Blu-Ray).

Sarah Palin Thinks Bush Administration Too Environmentally Friendly

Critter News

The state has sued Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, seeking to reverse his decision to give polar bears protection under the Endangered Species Act. Sarah Palin, a Republican, and other state officials say that by listing the bear as threatened, the government will cripple offshore oil and gas development. How far off the reservation do you have to be to sue the Bush administration over environmental issues because they are too strict?

Disneynature Earth Q&A

Inevitably, it’s a situation where you were there, and for me, it’s the swimming male polar bear. I was up high, high in the helicopter with this special, stabilized camera system we were using, and I knew that I was filming something that had never been filmed before because you can’t normally follow a polar bear out into the open ocean. When you see a dying male polar bear and you’ve been with that animal for a long time, it is hard.

Getting Emotional

Creature Talk

Last night I was watching Animal Planet, as I often do, and the show was about polar bears in the wild. There was a mama polar bear and her 2 cubs who were not yet full grown, but also not tiny. Due to lack of food, a big male polar bear was following the threesome in the hopes that he could eat one of the cubs (apparently they will eat their own kind if they can’t find other food).

Palin Now Going After Endangered Whales

Critter News

First wolves, then polar bears, now beluga whales. And those are just the endangered animals (remember the turkey being ground up during her tv interview?) At issue is the population of {the Cook Inlet beluga) whales, which were put under the protections of the Marine Mammal Protection Act eight years ago, which scientists argue hasn't sped their recovery: Palin begs to differ.

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: It is deeply troubling that a legally mandated and urgently needed decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act has been delayed by one agency of the Interior Department even as another agency rushes ahead with plans to sell oil and gas leases across a huge expanse of critical polar bear habitat in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea (“ Regulatory Games and the Polar Bear ,” editorial, Jan.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Bearing Up ” (Op-Ed, Jan. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the scientific literature is very clear that polar bear survival is highly threatened in the wild. Because polar bears are at the top of the marine food chain, their bodies accumulate persistent organic pollutants that disrupt their reproductive systems. We must recognize the shortsighted nature of Governor Palin’s appeal not to list the polar bear as endangered.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second Weekend of February 2012)

10,000 Birds

I found myself on the shore of Lake Ontario on the most bitter day of this mild winter to observe over 1,700 maniacs take a Polar Bear Plunge. Last weekend, millions of people devoted their full attention to football and the accouterments of Super Bowl festivities. This weekend, the annual Grammy awards along with the unscheduled and untimely demise of a pop icon ensured that music dominated wide interest.

It’s cold enough in Chicago—where our high temperature for the day was –2 degrees Farenheit—that the polar bear at the zoo spent the day inside. Is this “polar plunge” that’s gripping much of the U.S. Glad you asked. It’s cold enough to freeze vodka. It’s colder than both the South and North Poles. Midwest (and, soon, the East) bad for birds? On Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS

Animal Person

When I was asked if I wanted to read Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS (Rodale 2009) I was ambivalent. I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans. And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. This is all very unveganly, but I went for it nevertheless.

Having already blown a deadline, and disappointed in the half baked post I had prepared, I decided to chuck it all and go look for some birds this evening.
