They had to cancel a big project that would have showcased polar bears and seals. Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears. Lanthier doesn't hide his contempt for animal rights groups who lash out, without considering the role zoos play in conservation.

It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse. In other words, we can change the way we think about animals.

Sometimes being an animal rights advocate is emotionally exhausting. Last night I was watching Animal Planet, as I often do, and the show was about polar bears in the wild. There was a mama polar bear and her 2 cubs who were not yet full grown, but also not tiny. The mama bear was trying to get him back up but she couldn’t and eventually she had to leave him so that she could protect her other cub and herself.
