In retrospect, this weekend at Wuyuan was not exactly my finest hour as a bird photographer – hopefully, I could do better now, and perhaps one day I will, should normal traveling ever be possible again in China. I’d rather see yellow birds than yellow plants. Such a cute bird deserves a better representation.

Well, they mainly feed on birds, which may explain their low popularity. For the White-throated Rock Thrush , Wikipedia gives the slightly puzzling statement “The bird’s population is unknown, but is not increasing or declining.” Even if they look as charming as this Northern Boobook. Unfortunately, it is true though.

The person who named this bird apparently cleverly chose the name Yellow-rumped Flycatcher to distinguish the bird from the Narcissus Flycatcher, which is also yellow-rumped. In Chinese, this bird is called White-browed Flycatcher, which introduces some (possibly undesirable) logic into the world of bird names.

I found this cluster of Yellow-headed Blackbirds in Sierra Valley, California, on a bird outing with the local Audubon Society after installing some artificial Burrowing Owl habitat earlier that day. His rivals where on the other side of the bridge, foraging on the lily pads for aquatic insects. Yea, I’m bad!

Birding in Mexico is not like birding in the United States… especially when it comes to interpreting unusual sightings. Howell does not place the White-tailed Hawk anywhere near Morelia, but I have seen it in every cuadrant of the city, and know for a fact that it breeds near the church I pastor.

Turning off the asphalt, I enter the Deliblato Sands steppe, between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains in the northeast of Serbia, where the first bird to greet me is a Northern Wheatear , followed by a Crested Lark. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them.

It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here. Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani ) is a widespread and ubiquitous bird in disturbed grassy areas throughout much of the neotropics, including most of the Caribbean Islands. Incredibly social, Smooth-billed Anis form monogamous pairs that build a communal nest where all birds share in the responsibilities of feeding and tending to the young.

Shortly after the first bird leaves the feeder, the remaining woodpecker peaks around the edge of the feeder. These birds inhabit foothill and mountain woodlands and are closely associated with oaks and usually found in pine-oak woodlands. Yellow-throated Warblers are a rarity in New York State and as I mentioned earlier this year they are usually considered an “overshoot,” that is, a bird that usually breeds further south that occasionally flies past its breeding grounds during migration before realizing what it has done and turning around to go back to where it belongs.

Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. They don’t breed here, but winter strictly on the Front Range.

She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. She will begin breeding in April. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. The male is the only hummingbird in North America with a rufous back.
