Animal Welfare Act Inadequate for Farm Animals

How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “farm animals are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) only when used in biomedical research, testing, teaching and exhibition.
SAEN Files Complaints Against University of Washington Again

An animal-rights group that watchdogs research facilities across the country has filed a federal complaint against the University of Washington, citing multiple incidents in which animals were injured, escaped from their cages or were found dead. Harvard Medical School Facility Accused of Improper Research Reporting

An Ohio-based animal rights organization has filed a complaint against Harvard Medical School, alleging that the school's New England Primate Research Center in Southborough did not properly report its experiments on animals. Not a big surprise considering McCain's VP choice.

To the Editor: Re “ A Disgraceful Farm Bill ” (editorial, May 16): While the farm bill recently approved by Congress deals with enormous agricultural policy issues, it also includes three important provisions to protect animal welfare. Because the Agriculture Department enforces the Animal Welfare Act, this authorizing bill deals with a broad range of subjects regarding the humane treatment of animals.
Kathy Bauck: The Face of Puppy Mill Cruelty

Kathy Bauck, owner of Pick of the Litter Kennels in New York Mills, MN, was recently found guilty of four misdemeanors: one count of animal cruelty, and 3 counts of animal torture. An officer of the ASPCA reported her to the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act back in 1998 and no action was taken. Apparently animal TORTURE only ranks as a “misdemeanor. But that's neither here nor there -- I'm very supportive of animal research in principle. I'm sure we could do a much better job of ensuring the humane treatment of our laboratory animals--but at this point it's very difficult even to start the discussion.
