Any funds that are raised in excess of Skittles’ medical bills will be donated to Cape Ann Animal Aid, a no-kill animal shelter in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Reader Bridget needs our help! On April 15th, 2014, Skittles required emergency surgery due to an intestinal obstruction. Thank goodness, he is out of surgery and healing now. But, due to the surgery being an emergency performed by a specialist, his medical bills are through the roof.

Shy dogs are often among the first to be euthanized in shelters because they are difficult to adopt, but not at DogTown, a no-kill facility. Have you been watching this season of DogTown? If you haven’t, I would encourage you to do so. It’s such an inspiring show, with people who are doing amazing work on behalf of homeless animals. DogTown is the name of an area of Best Friends Animal Society in Angel Canyon, Utah.

Kitten Rescue’s goal is to help Los Angeles become a no-kill city. Kitten Rescue is a wonderful animal rescue organization! Founded in 1997, it has become one of the largest animal rescue groups in Los Angeles. They are non-profit, and they are totally volunteer run! They have had truly great success in finding loving new homes for unwanted cats and kittens. Kitten Rescue volunteers place approximately 1,000 cats and kittens into new homes every year.

The no-kill shelter I adopted them from didn’t know too much about them except that they were found half-starved in the Jasper area after Hurricane Rita tore through areas of the east Texas coast. We jangled our keys throughout the day and night for no reason and they learned not to associate the sound with our leaving. Many dogs are rescued out of abusive or traumatic situations, causing them to exhibit a wide variety of emotional and behavioral problems.

Best Friends Animal Society is a national animal welfare organization focused on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationwide from 17 million per year to about 4 million.
