The first stop of the morning: young White–tailed Eagle , right next to the road and several dozen Rooks around. The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve. I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. The boat Captain got us right in close. I caught this Guillemot on the way back with dinner.

After filling our water bottles at the clear mountain spring, the group splits and the majority continue on foot across the high pass to find many signs of bear presence in the area – scratching posts, scat (above), footprints; while the two of us continue by car along the very good final section of macadam prior to the village. In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence.

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. This is a protected area that includes the Los Cusingos Bird refuge, where we were guided by Andres Chinchilla, a young man who as a child ran around the farm where his family worked, and was to become this incredible bird refuge. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). ’ They are challenging to find, frustrating to photograph, and the antbird experience often includes heat and humidity, mud and bugs. 1,712 species, 12% of which are endemics. I shouldn’t have been surprised.

Far less experience the two in a single morning. We later saw another group of 19, and finally a distant flock of 52. A Mangrove Rail called continuously for about twenty minutes from within the protective cover of the mangrove.
