In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. Photo by Adam Riley.

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. Drongos feed more effectively when in such flocks, so the benefits go both ways.

After filling our water bottles at the clear mountain spring, the group splits and the majority continue on foot across the high pass to find many signs of bear presence in the area – scratching posts, scat (above), footprints; while the two of us continue by car along the very good final section of macadam prior to the village. Here are some highlights and observations of that very birdy weekend at Selva Bananito: There are a lot of pewees that pass through Costa Rica : Based on past experiences of pewee mania, I already knew this to be the case but this trip really took the cake. I think we saw more than 30 Bay-breasteds in one day, in one fairly small area.

Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). ’ They are challenging to find, frustrating to photograph, and the antbird experience often includes heat and humidity, mud and bugs. 1,712 species, 12% of which are endemics.
