Turns out, Monday brought more than a little rain, and we got soaked as we explored the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge along the ocean. Someone had told me a group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers called this patch of forest home, and we were determined to find out if he was right.

In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. Photo by Adam Riley.

Try Bermuda Petrel, Pterodroma cahow , one of the group of seabirds called gadfly petrels. She places the cahow’s tale within the larger story of how Bermuda’s endemic plants and wildlife, especially the Bermuda Cedar, were exploited and replaced with invasives that caused more destruction. These are magical experiences.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. This protected area is of special importance for migrating waders, of which some 27 species were reported here, including Pied Avocet , Temminck’s Stint , Red-necked Phalarope , Sanderling and Dunlin.
