Fish Creek to Buffalo

10,000 Birds

This week I will introduce you to the section from Fish Creek to Buffalo. My journey this week was a return trip from Fish Creek to Buffalo. I continued on to the old Buffalo railway station and there are toilet and picnic facilities available and a playground for children. Over the return trip from Fish Creek to Buffalo I encountered over forty species of birds. The post Fish Creek to Buffalo appeared first on 10,000 Birds.

The fabric is hand selected and each bag is hand made in Buffalo, New York! Let’s talk about poop for a second. We all know that we need to scoop the poop, but what then? What if there isn’t a trash bin nearby? What do you do with the poop bag? This was exactly the problem that Nancey Herrmann set out to solve when she created the Do-G-Bag ! No more keeping that poop in your hand, just put it in the handy bag until you can dispose of it properly.

Animal Person

The inaugural winner would be John Carbonaro, who found an article called " Slaughterhouse in Buffalo Wins Zoning Approval." Briefly: Zoning board in Buffalo unanimously approved plans for a slaughterhouse (as in, a place where chickens, goats, lambs and calves will be killed and chopped up). I think I'm going to start a contest for the most absurd/ironic/bizarre sentence to come out of the mouth of a human each week.

New Book Shows Mark Twain an Early Advocate Against Animal Cruelty

Critter News

Twain wrote a searing account of an English earl’s behavior on a buffalo hunt (in “Man’s Place in the Animal World”) and wrote an impassioned anti-bullfighting novella (A Horse’s Tale). A new book by author and Stanford professor Shelly Fisher Fishkin reveals that Mark Twain was an early advocate against animal cruelty. Called Mark Twain's Book of Animals , the book contains a number of his writing about animals.

The same is true for cows, pigs, fishes, turkeys, chickens, buffaloes, sheeps, goats, and many other nonhuman animals whom we call "food." William Horden's, " The Sacred Space of the Shared Heart " is exactly the type of piece I am talking about when I express frustration over "spiritual" people who kill nonhuman animals or who have them killed for a meal. Where Are You Birding This Fourth Weekend of November 2014?

10,000 Birds

As someone who lives close enough to Buffalo to feel both tremendous fear and relief regarding the 7 feet of snow that engulfed that part of Western NY, I can assure you: November weather is WILD. No snow here! If this weekend affords you a window to get outdoors, you should take it… who knows when a snownami or similar calamity will blow your way. I’m thinking of heading to Lake Ontario to see if any smart birds fled east.

10,000 Birds

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). Image taken in Uganda’s Budongo Forest by Adam Riley Buffalo The big – to anyone familiar with the wilds of Africa, the Cape or African Buffalo is the most fearsome of all animals.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

10,000 Birds

Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed. Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake. Then, there was a herd of buffaloes. Yet, since I wasn’t moving, one buffalo decided that my car would make an ideal scratching post, even opted to clean its horns against me.

Some African Skimmers pass by some African Buffalo. It’s a month to I go traveling in Africa again, but between that date and now I have a massive project to deliver, which has reached the ‘invading my dreams’ level of panic. Consequently my usual pre-travel excitement is a lot lower than usual, and I’m spending much less time than I’d like unproductively daydreaming about the birds I’ll see.

What Makes You Stare So, Bufflehead?

10,000 Birds

Bufflehead comes from the now archaic word buffle , meaning ‘buffalo.’ ’ Bufflehead is the condensed version of ‘Buffalo Head’, the name these ducks were originally given. I suppose the densely feathered, black and white head of the drake does slightly resemble a buffalo’s head. November visits upon New York dank, leaden chill and multitudes of ducks.

In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. While I was actually photographing a herd of buffalo, this Merlin buzzed my head several times. Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! I am actually jumping out of my assigned beat area, to share some photos from my trip to Kodiak Island Alaska.

The Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock’s numbers hovered on the edge of collapse until the 1960s, never numbering more than 34 birds in total. Secondly, its interesting to highlight that all of the ancestors of both birds come from Wood Buffalo National Park.

Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest

10,000 Birds

On the website he reminisces fondly about his “best hunt,” where he killed 3,125 crows in 9 days, bringing to mind the days when people slaughtered seemingly endless flocks of passenger pigeons and herds of buffalo. Read your own headline, take a look at the buffalo skulls pictured at right, and wake up, Rip Van Winkle. I am not anti-hunting. I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition.

Although it was nothing like going from New York to California or even Buffalo, New York to North Carolina, a change of location, however slight, can bring new birds especially in Costa Rica. Week 16: South Africa and Kruger National Park

In the first full day, we have seen dozens each of giraffes, zebra, warthogs, elephants, 12 rhinos, 30 hippos, 3 Cape Buffalo, crocodiles, jackals, monkeys, baboons, literally a thousand impala, and at least 10 different antelope type animals. After a very long day of 7 hours of driving, 11 hours flying and then 9 hours more driving, we have arrived at our temporary home here in South Africa. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.

Crocodiles, Cape Buffalo and Hippos are plentiful. By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home. The “Electric Wire Panic” of 1889, which saw the horrific deaths of several electrical linemen in Buffalo and New York City, did little to quell public fears about the overhead tangles of wires proliferating in the rapidly electrifying metropolises of the late 19 th century – but it did help settle the “War of the Currents” and usher in a new age of much-needed regulation.
