Birding Dongfang and Dongzhai on Hainan

Here, nervous Cattle Egrets trying to quit smoking pace restlessly on buffalos. The closest we got to habitat similar to Dongfang was on the last day of the trip, close to Haikou airport, at Dongzhai. This is an area of narrow, slightly elevated roads passing muddy fields and the occasional fishpond.

Jumping out of my “Beat” today

In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. While I was actually photographing a herd of buffalo, this Merlin buzzed my head several times. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin.

In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. The Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock’s numbers hovered on the edge of collapse until the 1960s, never numbering more than 34 birds in total. By 1950, the Louisiana flock was gone.

Bufflehead comes from the now archaic word buffle , meaning ‘buffalo.’ ’ Bufflehead is the condensed version of ‘Buffalo Head’, the name these ducks were originally given. I suppose the densely feathered, black and white head of the drake does slightly resemble a buffalo’s head.

At any rate there are three species, the Black Skimmer (which isn’t that much blacker than the others) which is found in the Americas, the Indian Skimmer, which is the most vulnerable member of the family, and the African Skimmer, which is widespread but nowhere common in Africa.

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

For example, the Red-billed Buffalo Weaver has a pseudo-penis, not quite a cloaca, not quite a penis. Cassowaries give the Buffalo Weaver a run for his money as both sexes have a penis and clitoris. He interpreted the bones, also at Klasies but other sites in South Africa as well, to indicate that human ancestors hunted only Eland until they became fully modern very recently, then they started hunting the much more dangerous and harder to hunt Buffalo. Awesome Birding at Aripo Savannah

The lush pastures of the Aripo Livestock Station sustained herds of happy Buffalypso , a special breed of T&T beef cattle named for their Water Buffalo heritage and Calypso-happy country.
