The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

But my experience suggests there is a fair amount of geographical overlap between the two ranges in my area. I almost always see the Rufous-crowned Warbler in groups of two or three. However, in the right habitat I can actually get tired of hearing the lilting song of our endemic Slate-throated Redstart.

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. The birds have to be correctly drawn, show the right colors, postures, and be painted with care but when it all comes together, beautiful bird art is in a category of its own. Posters of three groups of birds are currently available; toucans, trogons, and hummingbirds. These are all of the toucan species that occur in Costa Rica.

The female isn’t quite so unreal but is still a cool little bird in her own right. If you do happen to see one way up there in the canopy, since it’s more like watching a dark bug flying around than admiring the shifting colors of a dark velvet chocolate hummingbird, the Snowcap experience deserves to be enjoyed at ground level.

During our visit, one was sleeping high in a tree right next to the parking area. While watching groups of Red-eyed Vireos in the parking area, we had great looks at at least two different Cerulean Warblers along with a few of their more common Paruline relatives. After all, Teale Fristoe, the designer of Birds of a Feather , had offered a free prototype to try out so it’s not as if I was risking my own money on this seemingly odd experiment. The female of the species is beautiful in her own right but only the male had been seen here. It’s always fun to add another life bird to your list, especially when you get to share the experience with several birding friends. I was not disappointed! I found the experience of authentically aggressive heat rather refreshing, but much prefer my moderate New York summers! Multiple groups of trogons with young in the United States seems surreal, but is entirely possible in the right place. But like so many things, evaluations of temperature can be relative.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

If there’s one group of birds that just won’t let you be miserable it would have to be the Grey-crowned Babbler. They are usually in a group and our garden regularly has a family group of eight visit it. If you have any experience with these birds then it makes perfect sense.

Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. That was no deterrent from landing right in the middle of the road.

And, of course, there was a group of youngsters barbecuing. They got the message right. After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. More or less, a proper picnic site. The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night.
