In simplest terms it is where the landfast ice meets the open ocean, and it is a magnet for wildlife, especially in the 24 hour light of the Arctic spring. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Ringed Seal.

During my favorite birding event of the year, the annual Big Sit at Fort Tilden in Queens in October , we had hit a lull and were desperately trying to scrape up a few more species when Matthieu spotted a pelican and all was right with the Big Sit once again. Now, dont get me wrong, there have been some nice birds, and locations in between, but these two experiences are just so hard to put out of my mind. I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. The boat Captain got us right in close. I caught this Guillemot on the way back with dinner.

We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. The basic Gelada social unit is a harem (or unimale group) made up of a dominant male and several females (1-12), their young and sometimes subordinate males.

They don’t flush often and can be found in groups up to 40-50 birds in the wintry mountain ecosystem. I learned early and often when I moved to Colorado that a birder will have to up their physical ante to experience some of these birds. At which point, the Owl will lunge out at pluck the bird right off it’s perch.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. They were still listed as Endangered, but wildlife management measures taken in this park were clearly working. Hence, the experiment was created: a plot was fenced off to keep the animals away and now willow saplings did survive being submerged for half a year. And they both graze grass and browse younger branches and saplings.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Common Kingfisher , Common Hoopoe and the European Bee-eater come from their nesting holes at the high loess-bluff of the opposite, right bank of the river. “I would certainly recommend Serbia to visiting birders.
