Though I grew up where the Hudson Valley meets the Catskill Mountains, in the heart of Black Bear country, I can count my encounters with said bears on the fingers of one hand. In my later teenage years I saw a bear or a mother-and-cub pair three times when I was behind the wheel of my car. That’s a big bear!

In the most of Europe, Brown Bear is a mythical creature that lives only in mediaeval tapestries and folk tales. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not much further, on the new tarmac that ends 6 km before the Gramos village, we find muddy bear footprints crossing the road.
