I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal.

Quite a few mammals come out in the open to steal bananas left for the birds. Add Common Tody-Flycatcher and several Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers and Brown-hooded Parrots to that picture, among many others. Once a Peregrine Falcon flew above the veranda, while several distant King Vultures were soaring above the valley.

Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. I came with 957, and started to collect my birds like an Acorn Woodpecker collects its nuts. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

Of course, LVNP has a great variety of woodpeckers on their bird list , eight of them known to nest in the area, including the White-headed Woodpecker (Picoides albolarvatus. We will hopefully see the rare Black-backed Woodpecker ( Picoides arcticus ) as well. This is a male with some treats for the youngsters.

Jeff Gordon and I were wandering around the seriously disturbed habitat behind the airport hotel we stayed in outside of Budapest when a bizarre mammal about the size of an opossum crossed the path in front of us. The only mammal species I have observed here were the Brown Hare and Least Weasel , but Golden Jackals and even Wild Boars are present, too. Tactics: Aim for early mornings and from the end of April, carry an insect repellent for mosquitoes. Extras: Beside birds, Reva is an important habitat for dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata).

Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Then we flushed a hidden Diard’s Trogon , a flash of grey and crimson as it took off. A female Crested Fireback.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.
