Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. The highlight again happened before we left the camp, a family of Crested Firebacks.

March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I was pleased to add a new woodpecker to my Queens list too. We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding. Oh, and there were mammals too.

In the 1960s, Efraín Chacón constructed a dirt trail [from San Gerardo de Dota] to the Pan-American Highway, and brought his family to build a house, to farm and fish for trout. Like most of the lodge, this bathroom has a glass wall, this one overlooking the feeders and my lifer mammal, my first opossum ever.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.
