Well, I never did see a Black-backed Woodpecker on my trip, but they were on my mind… What could be more straightforward than the naming of woodpeckers? The name woodpecker itself is a basic behavioral description. Here are birds that peck at wood. The exceptions are still mighty prosaic.

This is a Green-barred Woodpecker , common and widespread throughout South America to the south of the Amazon River and to the east of the Andes. This form is thought to be a different species and the name Golden-bellied Woodpecker has been adopted by some.

By contrast, the Lineated Woodpecker is not only resident, but wears the same outfit all year. So too does the Crimson-crested Woodpecker. Let this Roseate Tern represent all terns that (even for a brief period) share this coloration. A good eye-to-eye might be necessary to understand why this Great Antshrike is included on this list.

Another typical plant of this area is the local Ceiba, member of a family of trees that produce the fiber known as kapok. One of Paso Ancho’s signature species is the always amusing Gray-Cheeked Woodpecker. Not only woodpeckers like the woodpeckers’ homes. The endemic Dusky Hummingbird is also a big fan.

Hoffmann’s Woodpecker. This beautiful woodpecker does very well in edge habitats and is the common, expected species in the Central Valley and dry areas of the Pacific slope. Keep looking and you might see some other members of this glittering, fast-paced family. You’ll find them in other types of edge habitats too.

The Groove-billed Ani is an odd-looking member of the Cuckoo family. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are exceedingly common here, both in the city and in the countryside. The characteristic calls of the Ladder-backed Woodpecker can be heard anywhere that there aren’t too many people. They are residents, but not common ones.

At the edge of the woods, we were entertained by the snapping sounds and eye-catching colors of White-collared Manakins , a family of calling Rufous-winged Woodpeckers , and a few other species of humid forest habitats. Cardinal Woodpecker. Three species of woodpecker, from the large Bearded Woodpecker to the smaller Golden-tailed Woodpecker and the even smaller Cardinal Woodpecker, searched the trunks and branches, while on the smallest tips of the branches the tiny Long-billed Crombec clambered about in search of food.

The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. but walking to the Schollevaar hide I saw Common Chaffinch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow , European Stonechat , Eurasian Blackbird , Eurasian Blue Tit , Common Kestrel and even a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Skeins of Greylag Geese completed the picture.

Another California endemic, the Nuttall’s Woodpecker made an appearance… As did the family oriented Acorn Woodpecker. They will begin mating and nesting behavior here soon… And there are Oak Titmouse aplenty! A Turkey Vulture was soaring above… And a bit later, a Red-tailed Hawk.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. While the idea of a Ground Woodpecker sounds a bit absurd, it helps to know that this species mostly lives on ants, similar to the Wryneck (another woodpecker, though it does not look much like one). A challenge for young birders, maybe.

I suspect that this finch belongs to the Woodpecker family from the shape of the beak but I welcome any other comments. When he landed on the tree his woodpecker behavior became a little more apparent and his beak shape convinced me of his type. I found him near “Los Gemelos” at approximate 600 m.a.s.l. on Santa Cruz Island.

My best sighting was a Hairy Woodpecker puffed up to fight the cold. On Saturday he dragged his family to the Adirondack Mountains to see a stake out Great Gray Owl in Keene, a first for all three in the family. Rochester is still wintry, but bird activity among the common species has picked up quite a bit.

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. Similarly, the Alpine Leaf Warbler is one of the more attractive species in an otherwise almost indistinguishable family of identical leaf warblers. (“But the difference in wing bars, Kai!”). A Grey-headed Woodpecker lives nearby. He says the sound of the stream keeps him calm when woodpecker life starts getting stressful.
