While the reedbeds along this town’s southern shore are not actually standing in water right now, the soil is still wet enough to keep them green and, apparently, keep them from burning. Both species can theoretically breed in central Mexico, but in my experience are almost exclusively winter visitors. And it brought friends.

You can get a sense of the breadth of my European birding experience by how many of my lifers have the word “Common” in their names. Gee, I hope I got this one right.
