There were other birds, of course – Brown-throated Parakeets that flew past low and quickly threw us for a heart-pounding loop. Nevertheless, it was still a magical experience sitting in the jungle. That morning wore on, and still there was only the Sun, so intense it seemed as if the clouds all shied away from obscuring it.

I’ll still probably try again next June, as this June has been the driest and hottest in memory, and in my experience, summer rains make it much more likely that one will see the Sinaloa Martin. I did however manage to be in the right place at the right time to experience a gang of Magnificent Frigatebirds that had a Red-footed Booby surrounded. The seabirds are of course, the main attraction. If you look carefully, you can just see its meal about to be ejected.

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. The many small ponds and waterways attract quite a few ducks, though presumably due to their China experience, they are extremely wary of people. Of course, winter can be a depressing time even for birds.

The Asian Brown Flycatcher does not count as a season-starting bird – discrimination, of course. Anyway, not a bad look for a juvenile given the bland look of some of the bulbuls I recently saw in Borneo, though of course, the adult bird looks more distinct.

The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

For example, if I drive due east a half hour and then turn right, in another half-hour I drop from about 7,000 to 3,300 feet. But if I skip the right turn and continue east on the “Thousand Peaks (Mil Cumbres) Highway”, the same half-hour will take me up to an altitude of 10,000 feet.

With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. The repeat sightings reveal a great deal about the bird’s movements, but of course we don’t know where it bred. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.
