A couple of years ago I wrote about whether it's a good use of my time to be a purist about the term "animal rights" when most of the world doesn't have the same understanding of the term as I do. Or how a paragraph would refer to animal rights and animal welfare as if they're interchangeable.

I walked up to it but it of course, moved away from me. The turtle didn't speed up or go the opposite direction, it just kept slowly crawling, getting right up close to the bird, who didn't even seem to pay it any mind as it passed. Was walking today and saw a turtle.

And this remnant lake is very, very birdy: The dominant birds, besides those American White Pelicans seen at the right, were Northern Shovelers — hundreds of them. I normally see Ruddy Ducks on the lake’s deepest waters, and as I said, there are no deep waters in the Lake Cuitzeo right now.

I'm a longtime proponent of animal rights, but this suit is ridiculous. Second, it is not a necessary condition for the possession of rights (legal or otherwise) that one be a person. That fact alone suffices to grant them a legal right not to be made to suffer. The right is defeasible, of course, as it is in the case of humans.

There were other birds, of course – Brown-throated Parakeets that flew past low and quickly threw us for a heart-pounding loop. These thorny shrubs concealed a plethora of birds, including two small doves, Common Ground Dove (below) and the even smaller Plain-breasted Ground Dove (further below). A tropical tree called Jocote ( Spondias purpurea ) is in full fruit right now, so almost all of these birds’ ivory bills were dyed a light pink color. It’s mating season, and the males are sporting some wild head feathers right now. Of course, Curve-billed Thrashers are some really tough birds. Serious attitude.

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. Of course, winter can be a depressing time even for birds. Northern Lapwings are difficult to get right on a photo, as their metallic greenish sheen often comes over as just undifferentiated black.
