I am puzzled as to why Gulls and Terns are almost passed over, with less than two pages of text devoted to a family description and only six species accounts (four gulls, two terns). Family follows family with no page break, making this section a little dense. Woodpeckers are a family of focus for Tuttle-Adams.

Yellow-winged Caciques , showy members of the Blackbird/New World Oriole family, are always conspicuous residents of the region. A tropical tree called Jocote ( Spondias purpurea ) is in full fruit right now, so almost all of these birds’ ivory bills were dyed a light pink color. And yes, the Caciques are building nests.

Similarly, the Alpine Leaf Warbler is one of the more attractive species in an otherwise almost indistinguishable family of identical leaf warblers. (“But the difference in wing bars, Kai!”).

Two Great Horned Owl chicks had successfully fledged from Veteran’s Park at Baywalk , a small park that was once a three-hole golf course on Okaloosa Island. I concentrated my camera on the chick on the right which was best placed, but not best pleased when an adult delivered a food parcel to one of the other siblings. Of course not. We pulled into the parking lot, got out of the car, and before I’d even had a chance to pull my binoculars out of my backpack, an adult eagle soared right over our heads.
