Citrine Wagtails are rare in Shanghai but apparently quite common around Chaka, though unfortunately most of the ones we saw were not in breeding plumage. The Brown Accento r certainly ranks among the less attractive accentors, though of course, some species in this family set a rather high bar. I blame this on covid-19.

As this is a coastal place, there are of course lots of waders, in larger numbers, and more variety than in Shanghai. Eurasian Oystercatcher: Not all of them are breeding at Claire`s beach in Australia. , most of the area was actually quite empty, with only a few places overrun by people rather than frequented by birds.

In my imagination, the job of a male Australian Brush Turkey is pretty similar – removing or adding bits and pieces to his pile of rotting vegetation in order to get the right temperature to incubate the eggs buried underneath to hatch. It breeds in tree holes, presumably explaining the more commonly used name for it.

A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Any destruction like this of a wetland would be bad, of course. Another is in the works. . By then it could be too late.

I did however manage to be in the right place at the right time to experience a gang of Magnificent Frigatebirds that had a Red-footed Booby surrounded. The seabirds are of course, the main attraction. Both Brown and Red-footed Boobies actively breed on Little Tobago as well as Saint Giles.

According to the HBW, when breeding, male birds do most of the incubation and parenting while females often leave the nest up to one week before the eggs hatch. Of course, on Chongming, the Chinese Pond Heron is very common. It concludes that human activity influences the breeding activity of the lapwing. End of side note.

Wood Sandpipers are more common in the north of Australia than the south and they breed in the northern hemisphere with a range that covers from Scandinavia in the west to Siberia and Kamchatka in the east. We observe the Wood Sandpipers come and go each year, but their exact migration route and breeding grounds remains a mystery.

Birds of course! Pre-dawn birding for us on October 8 gave four owl species, a Common Potoo (not so common), and then a host of species right at and just after dawn. I’m grateful to have finally gotten that opportunity on October 8 and look forward to doing more pre-dawn birding on that road and other sites in the area.

It looks fairly flashy in its breeding plumage, much less so in winter. I am not a big fan of the Spotted Dove , though it has to be said that in the right light, it can also look quite nice. It is much more likely to be found in larger flocks, at least outside the breeding season.

Getting intimate with a species over the course of the breeding cycle is one of the more rewarding aspects of birding, and field research too. The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period).

Horned Larks breed widely over North America, including up here in the High Arctic. Horned Lark fledglings seem impossibly big to me, like they are larger than the adults (which of course they are not). Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. Calling for mom.

These Burrowing Owl photos were taken at a rare breeding site in Vacaville California. These were taken right outside the golf course fence and within a hundred feet of a car dealership parking lot. If this bird doesn’t deserve this conservation award, I don’t know what species does.
