Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. According to the HBW, based on strong morphological, ecological, and genetic differences, this is likely to be a distinct species altogether. I always feel a bit sad for bird species that probably cannot even pronounce their own names.

The next area was the Pacuare River Gorge, which features Class III and IV rapids. This species qualifies as Critically Endangered because extensive habitat destruction and capture for the cagebird trade are causing extremely rapid and continuing population declines. Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed. The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). And it does not even live in reeds.

My NRLI fellowship class zipped across the Rodman Reservoir in two air boats, avoiding the submerged tree trunks leftover from the bottomland forest that once grew here. I not only appreciated the diversity of species, but also just how many birds there were. Egrets in the distance. The photographic opportunities were endless.

Both expected species of loons were around in numbers. I count myself particularly fortunate that I live in a world class city with access to some wonderful natural places. It’s no surprise we confused Winter and Pacific Wrens; until 2010, they were considered the same species! In fact, the Winter Wren was split into three species: the Winter Wren, the Pacific Wren, and the Eurasian Wren.
