The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area. The raptors of Ruoergai deserve a separate post.

Admittedly, early May is too late to find most duck species in Michoacán, even in a good year.) But I did find a wonderful surprise on that trip , a species to which I will return below. There was also a noisy family of Nutting’s Flycatchers to keep me company: Yum! It was only a bit better for shorebirds and egrets.

I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter. For example, the Diamond Dove is the world’s second-smallest species of the columbidae order ( source ). The Latin species name haematonotus (“blood-backed”) sounds a bit more exciting but not necessarily more accurate.

For my next visit in the following summer, we decided to organize a company birding trip to La Estanzuela – another treasure spot in the Cumbres. Mining companies have established themselves adjacent to the flamingos’ nesting sites and feeding sites. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

There is one other nature reserve further south, the Obedska bara wetland, managed by the state forestry company. When such a company runs a nature reserve, it is a bit like having a fox to watch over your chickens. The hide overlooking the breeding colony of Red-footed Falcons.

In the Old World, Horned (Slavonian) Grebe breeds in a wide belt stretching from Scandinavia to Kamchatka and it spends winters along sea coasts, from Japan to China and from Norway to France, plus the Adriatic and the Black Sea (west and east of the Balkans, respectively). As a consequence, this species is only a rare vagrant in Serbia.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

The island’s largest salt lake, Akrotiri, is not a great draw for waders, but the range of large, shallow saline pools on its east side, along Lady’s Mile, were in perfect condition to attract a wide variety of species. These ruffs still had a 1,000 or more miles to fly to reach their northern breeding grounds.

I usually spot Ruddy Turnstones in winter, hunkered down on windswept jetties being blasted by salt spray in the company of Purple Sandpipers. Trinidad is the northern limit of the range of the Red-breasted Blackbird , though it is unclear if the occasional birds that show up in Tobago are wanderers from Trinidad or northern South America or are breeding there. You can also find Red-breasted Blackbirds in Costa Rica and Panama and south to Peru and Brazil.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics.
