Most of the breeding birds returning here will arrive within the next 10 days to two weeks. Breeding is well underway and everywhere you look the Glaucous Gulls are, ahem, engaged or collecting grasses and sedges for nests. My favourite spot will be frantic with shorebirds soon, arriving, displaying, breeding and disappearing to nest.

” Writing about owls means writing about roughly 250 species (I counted 245 on the 2022 Clements spreadsheet, but I might have missed a few, and we all know that each classification system is different). The chapters on courtship and breeding and roosting and migration are the longest, which isn’t surprising.

When not climbing, he collected species, and thus a number of birds are named after him. So, like a football stadium named after an insurance company, the broadbill ended up bearing a name celebrating a sponsor. Interestingly, the first description of a nest of Whitehead’s Spiderhunter was only published in 2015.

Basically, this species is so dimwitted, it doesn’t know how to survive. Because, Pink Pigeons are not capable of doing the tasks required to create and bring up children of the species. These endangered birds have trouble producing a fertilized egg and, even worse, they don’t even know how to build a nest so the egg survives?

Each species account is 2-pages long, one page of text and one page of photographs.

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Apparently, after a male first mates with a female, he throws out the first one or two eggs she lays in their nest.
